Our history Anglia Ruskin’s story starts in 1858, when the art critic, patron and philanthropist John Ruskin opened Cambridge School of Art. The art school grew to become Anglia Ruskin University, and it’s still at the heart of our modern-day campus in Cambridge. Over the years, a number of colleges and institutes have become part of Anglia Ruskin. They include the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology (CCAT) and the Essex Institute of Higher Education (formerly the Chelmer Institute – itself formed from the Mid-Essex Technical College and the Brentwood College of Education). At first, these colleges combined to become Anglia Polytechnic, and then Anglia Polytechnic

University in 1992. We’ve been known as Anglia Ruskin University since 2005.

Structure, academic management and finance Our Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive is Professor Iain Martin. The Vice Chancellor is supported by the Vice Chancellor’s Group (VCG) which consists of two Deputy Vice Chancellors and a Chief Operating Officer, each with specific areas of responsibility, plus the Director of Finance and the Secretary and Clerk to the Governors. Deans of Faculties and Directors of Professional Services combine with the Vice Chancellor’s Group to form the Corporate Management Team (CMT) and are responsible for our strategic and operational functions.

Our academic activities are organised into discipline-based Faculties, each headed by a Dean. Each has a Faculty Board responsible for quality assurance and curriculum development.

Academic authority rests with Senate which is made up of elected representatives and members of leadership. Senate is responsible for advising academic development in research, scholarship and teaching; the establishment of criteria for the admission of students; the appointment of external examiners; the assessment of students; the structure of the curriculum; quality assurance and the award of degrees and other qualifications, including honorary awards.

Financial overview We’re incorporated under the Education Reform Act as a Higher Education Corporation and are an exempt charity. We have a constant challenge to make sure that we are able to maintain and grow our income, despite the challenges in a highly competitive market. For this reason, we’re seeking to diversify our income streams in order to ensure long term sustainability and headroom for growth.

Our locations

Chelmsford campus Our dynamic and architecturally outstanding campus is set in the city’s university and innovation quarter, which is just a short stroll from Chelmsford’s city centre and railway station. Our campus borders the River Chelmer with its attractive green and lush surroundings and riverside paths. Park & Ride buses drop off and pick up passengers on campus. Our Chelmsford campus will be home to our new School of Medicine from September 2018. Cambridge campus Our Cambridge campus is in the heart of the city and has reached a milestone in its history with the opening of our £35 million redevelopment. The regenerated campus opened in September 2011 and provides a wealth of new facilities which will benefit our Anglia Ruskin community. Park & Ride facilities are conveniently located close to campus. In January 2018 we opened our £45 million Science Centre . Peterborough campus Guild House in Peterborough is home to our smaller university community. We’re proud of our superb modern skills lab with state-of-the-art nursing equipment. And we love being close to the historic city centre with its imposing cathedral, plus museums, restaurants, theatres and parkland. A regional presence In order to make Higher Education accessible to all we’ve developed links with a range of regional colleges, these include; University Centre Harlow, University Centre Peterborough and University Centre West Anglia (King’s Lynn).

An international presence We have an increasing number of

overseas students from more than 185 different countries. This has created a very diverse academic community for the benefit for all our students. Our overseas university partnerships include China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, India, USA and Canada.

Our Estate & Future projects

This is an exciting time to be part of Anglia Ruskin University, with many interesting and innovative projects under development. We’ve built over 33,000 m2 (gross internal area) of new buildings over the past 10 years (including over 5,000m2 off campus in Harlow, Peterborough and Colchester), excluding refurbishments. Our Young Street Phase 1 building designed by Richard Murphy Architects won a silver in the Green Apple Awards 2014, while the subsequent phase 2/3 building was the best new large building

winner of the Cambridge Design & Construction Awards 2015.

We’ll be commencing the full refurbishment of our sports ground in Cambridge adding a new pavilion and both artificial and grass pitches. We currently have buildings under construction in both Chelmsford and Cambridge and are currently developing masterplans for both our major campuses that will involve a forward programme of both refurbishment of existing buildings and construction of additional buildings for both academic and residential purposes.

In January 2018 our £45 million Science Centre opened in Cambridge, it will enable more science, technology, engineering and mathematics students to benefit from state-of the-art facilities. Opening in September 2018 on our Chelmsford campus, our £20 million School of Medicine with its specialist teaching facilities will educate the next generation of doctors. We are the first University to host a medical school in Essex.

The Role Director of Estates and Facilities

The Anglia Ruskin Estate has been extensively redeveloped and expanded at all campuses over the last 20 years. With the launch of our new Strategy, Designing our Future 2017 – 2026, we have ambitious plans to further invest in our environment with new masterplans for the Cambridge and Chelmsford campuses and £200m in further investment.

The Director of Estates and Facilities will be responsible for the delivery of a customer centred estates and facilities management service that plays an integral role in supporting the University’s strategic and operational priorities. You will take strategic leadership responsibility for the development and management of the University’s Physical Environment and will inspire and manage a diverse team spanning the areas of capital programme delivery, estates maintenance, facilities management and space & asset management.

We are seeking an exceptional leader with a proven track record of developing and implementing property strategies across comparably large scale, diverse and technically complex portfolios. A natural collaborator, you will possess the interpersonal, communication and stakeholder management skills to succeed in a leading University.

Job Description

Principal Accountabilities:

Job Title: Director of Estates and Facilities

1. Lead and manage Estates and Facilities in the delivery of our University Strategy, achievement of our objectives, and realisation of our mission and values.

Grade: Senior Management Grade

2. Lead on the development and delivery of a cross-University estates strategy, based on agreed Masterplans.

Work Base: Chelmsford or Cambridge. Please note that the post- holder will be required to travel to other sites and overseas as necessary

3. Providing leadership to ensure we deliver our university strategy and sub plans through meetings/ mentoring/ generating reports/monitoring budgets/developing staff to ensure we have high performing teams delivering proactive services. 4. Ensure that the University has access to relevant data and reports to ensure timely and data led decision making in areas covered by the Division. This should include but is not limited to analysis and understanding of customer (students, staff, researcher) satisfaction.

5. Horizon scanning and networking to ensure we have access to new ideas and seek to achieve excellence in the development and management of our campuses.

Responsible for: Deputy Directors All staff within Estates and Facilities Relationships & Contacts: Pro Vice Chancellors and Deans of Faculties Directors of Professional Services Vice Chancellor’s Group (VCG) Students and Students’ Union External stakeholders, especially local authorities Job Purpose: To lead the delivery of an Estates and Facilities service which supports the delivery of the University Strategy in delivering excellent facilities and services.

6. Liaison with agents, local authorities and consultants to develop, bring forward and negotiate proposals for acquisitions and disposals and be a catalyst for change within the estate where appropriate. 7. Lead on capital developments, developing concepts/budgets and programmes for projects that have been agreed with staff with the team, using robust project and programme management techniques, manage progress to ensure targets are met.

8. Work directly with ARU staff to guide the design and procure individual capital developments and operational services to ensure we achieve the best outcomes.

9. Develop and review the range of strategies, policies, procedures and systems we need to manage and monitor our work.

10. Ensure we meet legislative compliance obligations and are maintaining our campuses adequately by ensuring we have all the reports and processes in place to monitor work undertaken and plan our maintenance strategies pro-actively.

11. Support the environment team in managing energy and their outreach work.

12. Manage effectively the human, financial and physical resources of Estates and Facilities in line with the University’s policies and procedures, ensuring an excellent level of customer service at all times to students, staff and external stakeholders.

13. Foster and develop an effective culture of partnership working across the University.

14. Work closely with the DVC (Education), Deans of Faculties, Course Leaders and others to develop and implement strategies to deliver educational facilities that enhance student success and satisfaction and respond rapidly to any areas of concern.

15. Work closely with the DVC (Research), Research and Innovation and Development Office and Deans of Faculties to develop and implement strategies to deliver and support the research facilities required to deliver on our strategic aspirations.

16. Play an active part in the Corporate Management Team, contributing fully to wider University management and strategy development.

17. Act as Chair or Deputy Chair of relevant University Committees, as required.

18. Represent Estates and Facilities and the University in the wider academic and professional community, contributing to external conferences, workshops and other fora to promote the reputation of the University.

19. Be responsible for Health and Safety, data protection, and all relevant compliance matters within Estates and Facilities, in accordance with our policies and relevant legislation.

20. Manage services including Catering and Student Accommodation in a safe, customer-focussed and commercially effective manner for staff, students and visitors.

21. Manage the financial and physical resources of the Estates and Facilities directorate in accordance with agreed budgets, and identify and exploit opportunities for income generation.

22. Advise the University on strategy, policy and practice across the service’s range of responsibility.

23. Undertake development projects as agreed from time to time.

24. Act as a Director of University subsidiary companies as agreed from time to time.

25. Comply with Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR requirements in all working practices maintaining confidentiality, integrity, availability, accuracy, currency and security of information as appropriate. Take personal responsibility for all personal data within own working environment.

26. Such other duties temporarily or on a continuing basis, as may reasonably be required, commensurate with your grade.
