April 2024 TPT Member Magazine

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA In Minnesota, April is synonymous with spring, as crocuses pop up through the remaining snow, and a green haze appears in the tree canopy. Even after our unusually balmy winter season, the arrival of spring is still a tremendous accomplishment. This time of rebirth is also a reminder of the beautiful world we share, so it is fitting that Earth Day occurs in April. On Monday, April 8 on TPT 2, we will premiere a special concert honoring songwriting masterminds Elton John and Bernie Taupin, who recently received the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. As the creators of classic songs such as “Bennie and the Jets” and “Rocket Man,” you are sure to walk away humming some of their melodies. We also premiere a new episode of American Experience, Poisoned Ground: The Tragedy at Love Canal , which chronicles one of the most devastating environmental disasters in U.S. history. The film centers on the women of Love Canal who raised their voices and fought for accountability in the wake of the disaster. Airing on TPT 2 on Monday, April 22, the film is a powerful reminder of the relationship between the planet, people and public health. The end of April also marks the premiere of another new Minnesota Experience film, Profe , on Tuesday, April 23. The documentary centers on three Latina educator-activists who shed light on their efforts to offer culturally affirming education to Latine students at two Twin Cities schools, El Colegio in Minneapolis and Academia Cesar Chavez in Saint Paul. Profe combines historical interviews, archival and present- day footage to paint a picture of the Latine educational revolution in Minnesota — one which started with the Chicano Movement in the 1970s and continues to have real impact on Latine students today.
