HEART STUDIO HOW STUDIO McGEE IS MAKING OVER DREAM HOMES NOW T E X T STEWART KELLER

S ince 2014, the husband-and-wife team of Shea and Syd McGee have been sharing memorable interior design with the world and creating incredibly popular content about living beautifully. Fans in search of the Studio McGee aesthetic follow their work on social media, watch every episode of Dream Home Makeover on Netflix, and turn to their best-selling books The Art of Home and Make Life Beauti- ful for wisdom and inspiration. Another way the pair are beautifying the world is working with prominent brands to develop quality products that design enthu- siasts can bring into their own homes. Happily, that list of partners now includes both Kohler and Ann Sacks. Two fruits of these col- labs are the Edalyn faucet collection for the kitchen and the Casta faucet and accessory collection for the bath. There are also two lighting collections—the twinkling glass spheres of Embra and the crisp, translucent shades of Kernan. Two vanity collections, Malin and Seagrove, come with built-in sinks and quartz tops. And Studio McGee is already offering three tile collections in conjunction with Ann Sacks—with more on the way in the coming year. See more by visiting kohler.com. ■

MEET THE DESIGNERS

result, I need to work within the confines of the existing physical structure. I would love to work more on new constructions or total home renovations, where I can help create new bathrooms or the kitchen without existing space restrictions. How do you unwind when you’re feeling stressed out? Walking. I love the fresh air and being out- side. It helps me clear my mind. Is there a design upgrade you’d love to make in your own home? My primary bathroom. I love the new tech- nology that Kohler has released recently. Can you share something in the world of design that fascinates you? The blending of design, function, and tech- nology. For example, Kohler’s DTV design allows for controlling up to twelve outputs of water for an amazing shower experience. Would you live in a building that wasn’t originally designed as a residence? I am interested in the redevelopment of commercial space, like office buildings, into new residences, working to take a

What’s your personal design style? Simple and classic: timeless approaches. That, to me, is important for your kitchen and bathroom. It can last far longer than more trendy of-the-moment designs. Describe a memorable project. One of my clients had this amazing, beauti- ful old Victorian home in Summit. We fully redesigned her kitchen and bathrooms with updated, ultramodern flair but respecting her house’s Victorian history. Is there a TV show with design that you love? The Nate and Jeremiah Home Project . Of course, I am a bit biased as I helped design several of bathrooms in multiple episodes. I also helped design Jeremiah’s office kitchen. What color would you be and why? Yellow. It is bright and cheerful and reminds me of sunny spring and summer days. Is there another kind of design you’d like to do more of? Most of my projects are for clients who are remodeling their existing homes. As a

warehouse on the water in Hoboken and converting it into large loft apartments. What is something you hope clients have thought about when you begin working with them? Ideally, how they want to use the space. For example, in the shower, how many outputs of water—showerheads, rainheads, body sprays, handhelds—do they want? It not only sets the tone for the shower design but goes to the construction of the bath- room and coordination with the contractor. What makes you think: spring is here? Daylight. I love when the days last longer, and it is not dark when I go to work or come home.

CHASE SCENE

14 KOHLER Signature Store by GPS www.KOHLERbyGPS.com I n the heart of Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, a trea- sure trove of hardware hides at P.E. Guerin, the oldest decorative hardware firm in the United States. It’s also the only known functioning metal foundry in New York City. And after being invited to spend a morning exploring its impressive archive and witnessing its team of skilled craftspeople at work, I could easily see why Kallista turned to P.E. Guerin to partner on the creation of their ONE collection with its signature hand-hammered handles. As structures throughout the city are built and torn down all around us—their centuries-old hardware destined T E X T PAUL HAGEN WHERE FAUCETS ARE FINDING THEIR FINISH

P.E. Guerin understands the painstaking process of handcrafting hardware.

for the scrap heap, P.E. Guerin is not only preserving pieces of history, they’re holding on to the molds used to cast those pieces. That’s why when representatives from one of Henry Ford’s historic family homes came looking for help replacing its fixtures, P.E. Guerin was not only able to find samples that perfectly matched the home’s hardware, they were also able to make brand-new pieces from molds used to create the first versions of those century-old designs. P.E. Guerin is packed with these types of treasures. Its ground floor displays a wonderland of mermaids, fish, hip- popotamuses, turtles, elephants, cats and similarly fanciful

figures for someone to mold into metal. Their ornate espag- nolette bolts are a personal favorite of style icon Iris Apfel. And Broadway costume designer William Ivey Long once listed this as one of his favorite places in the world. But it’s behind and above this storefront where the mag- ic happens. At the back of the first floor is the pattern room that held those vintage molds for Ford’s Detroit home. Meanwhile, chemistry is bubbling away upstairs. In this very building, molds are made, and metal is heated and poured into these molds to create hardware. After each piece is poured and fitted, the process of filing down the rough edges and crafting the detailed finish begins. Skilled artisans use hammers and a collec- tion of chisels to create depth, shadow, pattern, and other enhancements to the surface using a technique called “chasing.” Their hands move with practiced certainty, each firm-yet-controlled strike of the hammer seemingly reveal- ing another millimeter of detail. It can be tremendously time-consuming, but one team member explains that they are doing what people have always done in the process of making art: bending light. “It’s exciting to contribute to the evolution of the ONE handle with our historic techniques,” says P.E. Guerin Vice President Martin Grubman. “The hand-hammering creates a refined yet highly tactile finish, dappled all over with spar- kling facets. This is a true celebration of handcraft.”

It is amazing to think that these very same artisans—in some cases at stations where people have been carefully shaping metal for over a century—are the ones who chase the details into each Kallista ONE hand-hammered handle. Kallista may not have been founded until 1979, but through this partnership they are imparting 167 years of care and craftsmanship into the ONE collection—a detail about which any homeowner can be proud. Greige was the word as Sergio Mercado Design dreamed up an ethereal bath rich with wood and stone elements and complete with Japanese paper sculptures floating above Components faucets and an Abrazo freestanding tub, both by Kohler.

AN ICONIC SHOW HOUSE MAKES ITS RETURN

A fter a three-year hiatus, Kips Bay Decorator Show House New York made a stylish return. More than 20 partic- ipating designers and architects transformed the River Mansion, an opulent Beaux-Arts structure built in 1902. Valued at $20 million, the mansion boasts seven wood-burning fireplaces and a 2,000-foot roof deck. Actress Julia Marlowe, the Mansion’s first resident, would be surprised by the dramatic transformation and pleased to see the photographic sa- lute to her in the grand entry. Trends on display included tex- ture—the tile in Wesley Moon’s kitch- en, wallcoverings in Sergio Mercado’s bath (left). Elsewhere, designs taken from nature brought life to spac- es—birds in the laundry, foliage in a powder room. And aquatic touches bubbled up in bedrooms, including Mary McDonald’s seaside grotto and Sasha Bikoff’s iridescent bed on a half-shell. The program has raised over $28 million since 1973 for causes like the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club. kipsbaydecoratorshowhouse.org ■ T E X T PAUL HAGEN PHOTOGRAPHY NICK SARGENT
