Partnerships: More Important Now Than Ever SHAPING THE SUPPLY OF FUTURE HOMES FOR THOSE LIVING WITH SIGNIFICANT DISABILITY
Under the NDIS framework, functions that are associated with Supported Independent Living and Specialist Disability Accommodation will be funded and managed separately. One of the keys to the success of this new system will be the way in which these two sectors understand their new frameworks and work together, in different ways, to deliver the best possible housing and support outcomes for residents with disability. This year Housing Choices conducted a series of discussion forums, bringing together the leaders of key providers in the disability and housing sectors. The forums facilitated discussion and the sharing of knowledge about the core aspects of NDIS, with a particular focus on how the sector can better understand the demand for Specialist Disability Accommodation.
The forums also provided a great opportunity for Housing Choices to understand the needs of disability support service providers when designing and developing appropriate accommodation. The aim is to find solutions for the issues that we are all facing and to support one another through one of the largest reforms to social services in Australia’s history. Key learnings from our own experience with developments are also informing how we will collaborate in the future and how we will shape new ways of working with partners. In the past 12 months we have learned much about the importance of understanding the roles of accommodation provider and support service provider. Of equal importance is early engagement with families, carers and advocates who are vital to effective planning - not only collecting data in relation to their individual needs, but also understanding their shared experiences and creating a consistent flow of communication.
