Petroleum NMVOC Emissions

In a second year of large annual decreases, 2020 saw petroleum NMVOC emissions decrease by 21.9%, including a 17.8% decrease in distribution emissions and a 26.1% decrease in refinery emissions. Most of these reductions are attributable to decreased demand resulting in decreased production and distribution requirements.

As with other air pollutant emissions, the majority of UK transport sector NMVOC emissions come from road transport, at 56.1% of the total. Following road transport, shipping emits 38.1% of UK transport NMVOC emissions. Year-on-year, all transport segments saw large decreases in NMVOC emissions: 62.6% from aviation, 20.1% from road, 45.1% from rail, and 12.3% from shipping.
