As a result of restriction relaxations in 2021, road traffic miles for Q1-Q3 in Great Britain increased in 2021, however total miles travelled remained nearly 30 billion miles below levels seen prior to 2020. LGV and HGV traffic saw the largest rebound, by 12.3% and 11.7%, respectively, while car traffic only increased by 8.1%. At the time of publication, Q4 2021 statistics have not been released. As a result, the above graph displays annual data for Q1-Q3 only.

Following a historic decrease in the vehicle fleet in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of vehicles increased by nearly 500 thousand vehicles in 2021. All segments of the vehicle fleet increased, however, the largest increases were seen in motorcycles, which increased by 4.4% – the highest year-on-year increase seen in that segment since 2015. The car segment grew only slightly by 0.6%.
