UK New Car Registration, by Propulsion Thousands UK New Car Registration, by Propulsion

While the number of new car registrations rebounded in 2021 by 1.25%, the number of traditional internal-combustion cars continued to decrease: petrol by 9.7% and diesel by 36%. On the other hand, hybrid and “other” propulsion car registrations increased. During economically challenging periods it is common for car registrations to fall. The dramatic decrease in registrations seen in 2020 and 2021 is in line with the economic landscape.

UK New Car Registration, “Other” Propulsion Thousands UK New Car Registration, ”Other” Propulsions

New registrations of “other” propulsion cars have continued to increase despite the opposite trend in ICE-only propulsion registrations. Although the year-on-year increases have been lower in 2021, battery- only and plug-in/range-extended hybrid car registrations increased by 76.4% and 60.6% in 2021. While economic challenges in 2020 and 2021 may have inhibited uptake of ICE- propulsion cars, “other” propulsion vehicle registrations continued to increase, reaching 560.5 thousand in 2021.
