Born during a war

complained about the British navy’s habit of searching for contraband during these search-and-seizure stops and also any Brit- ish seamen who had deserted their ships and were now working on American ships under American citizenship papers. In the U.S. there was also pressure for frontier ex- pansion and some looked north towards the Canadian territory as a potential target for future settlement. So the war was on, with England still su- perior on the seas while the land battles saw several victories on both sides along with crushing and sometimes confusing defeats. One victory for the Americans was the pillaging of Fort York and the Town of York, which later became Toronto. On the Canadian-British side there was an expedi- tion across the border deep into U.S. terri- tory that resulted in the burning of Wash- ington, D.C., including the original White House. Many of Plantagenet’s early pioneer families were of English, Irish or Scottish stock, and many of them were either de- scended from United Empire Loyalists who had left America after the Colonial War of 1776 or had been in the English military elsewhere and retired to Canada

with a land settlement pension. Several of them joined up with either the regu- lar British army units or one of the Ca- nadian militia groups during the War of 1812 and were present for the Battle of Crysler’s Farm near Morrisburg in 1813. The war ended the following year under

the Treaty of Ghent with neither side the real victor as every bit of territory each side had managed to capture during the past three years of conflict was returned to the other. Boundary disputes and the original issue of naval impressments was left to the diplomats to settle later.

hen John Chesser and Abner Hager built their sawmill and thus laid the foundation for the future village of Planta- genet, there was a war just starting to blow up between the British Empire and its for- mer colony, the United States of America. TheWar of 1812, as it became known, last- ed until 1814 and historians agree in gener- al that it was one of the most back-and- forth armed conflicts of all. The original cause of the war was linked to the past Napoleonic Wars between England and Napoleon Bonaparte’s French empire. Napoleon tried to blockade British ship- ping by closing all European ports under his control and warned that any neutral and French ships would suffer seizure if they vis- ited a British port before arrival at a conti- nental port. The British government, in turn, demanded all ships from neutral countries have a licence before they could sail to the European continent and enforced that order through search-and-seizure tactics since the British navy was the most power- ful of all at the time. The U.S. was a neutral nation then and the American government W

Chessers by direct descent and Chessers by blood and marriage gathered from all over Eastern Canada and up from the States to celebrate their 200 years of family his- tory since the founding of Plantagenet.
