DYNAMITE KILLED HIS BROTHER Alfred was born in 1833. in Stockholm. His father was an engineer who inven- ted underwater mines, and it was from him that the young Alfred learned. He went to America to study chemistry. He wanted to make an explosive that could be transported easily and that could ea- sily blast tunnels, canals etc. He devoted himself entirely to science. At the age of 24 he had his first patent, the first of 350 that he registered.

When he returned from America in 1860, he worked on the development of detonator capsules and smokeless gun- powder. He decided to test his inventi- on, and in 1864 he accidentally blew up the family factory in Stockholm. Several workers were killed, including Alfred’s youngest brother, Emil. And what about him?
