opening of the “Angelika Film Center”, one of my favourite cin- emas, which shows foreign films and independent American films. In the commercial movie world, where arthouse film is treated al- most like a museum exhibition piece, Angelika is certainly one of the most exciting galleries of cin- ematography. Film also brought me to an- other fantastic corner of New York. I worked on a role that re- quired me to take boxing les- sons. It was then that I discov- ered the famous “Gleason’s Gym” in Brooklyn. This is a legend- ary place where top boxers and ordinary civilians train along- side each other. Both Muham- mad Ali and Mike Tyson trained at Gleason’s. At this boxing club it is as though time has stood still. The walls, which are painted red and have peeling paint, are plas- tered with pictures of champions and celebrities who have trained there. The weights and machines seem to be from the ‘80s... Howev- er, everything works perfectly in this temple of American boxing. And as soon as I leave af- ter training, I drink coffee on the street. Until about ten years ago it was not easy to find good coffee in New York. But today the city is full of small coffeehouses that roast coffee themselves. “Stump- town Coffee Roasters” arrived in New York from Portland and is one of the first venues of its kind. The date of roasting is stamped on the paper bags containing their coffee. When you drink cof- fee from beans that were roasted

the previous day, the taste is the same as its aroma. That is a crazy blend of the scents of coffee, car- amel and chocolate. It is obliga- tory to drink it without sugar, but cakes are allowed. And while we’re on the subject of cakes, one place is special. “La- dy M” is a minimalist Japanese cake shop on the corner of 78 th Street and Madison Avenue. Their cakes are pure art and made from the world’s thinnest pancakes, which are separated by cream sim- ilar to that of the Balkan cream cake. And if you come to the “Pain d’Avignon” store, which is located in the Plaza Hotel, you can have coffee at and buy a cake just a few metres away at Lady M’s.
Although New York is a city of the future for many, I am con- stantly seeking the past in it. I am fascinated by that old New York, its parts and buildings that have the aroma of the late 19 th and ear- ly 20 th centuries. I love New York’s bridges. The Brooklyn Bridge was completed in 1883. The Queensboro Bridge, which I cross twice a day, was built in 1909. In F. Scott Fitzger- ald’s novel “The Great Gatsby” the character Nick Carraway says to Gatsby: “The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mys- tery and the beauty in the world”. That is my city.
