SYNOPSIS What if the woman history
remembers as Cinderella’s “wicked” stepmother was never the villain at all? Rachel Hochhauser’s Lady Tremaine reimagines
the familiar Cinderella story from the stepmother’s perspective, and things may have always been more complicated than we knew. Lady Etheldreda “Ethel” Tremaine is a twice-widowed mother trying to protect her family and secure her daughters’ future. In a society where women have limited choices and little financial independence, Ethel must navigate family expectations, social pressures, and the challenges of raising three very different girls—including her stepdaughter, Elin. When Elin’s life takes an unexpected turn after a royal ball, Ethel finds herself drawn into the world of the royal family. What initially appears to be a happily-ever-after story begins to reveal dark secrets. Ethel is forced to investigate the mystery surrounding the royal household and confront an impossible choice: protect the security she has spent years fighting to provide for her family, or risk everything to protect a stepdaughter who has never fully accepted her. READER’S TAKE “This story is so brilliantly constructed that it actually made me gasp out loud a few times. The plot twists and emotional revelations caught me entirely off guard, turning a familiar fairy tale into a gripping, unpredictable story. If you love deep character studies that challenge your original perceptions of good and evil, you absolutely need to pick this up. It is a stunning, eye-opening read.” —Ashley Eddy
