E very sport has its big game: the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Masters, the Kentucky Derby, and the NBA Finals. Similarly, most jobs have that one stretch of the year where you find out what you are made of. For our photographer, Matt Cornelius, this issue is his Super Bowl. Flip through these pages and count the photo credits, and you will see what I mean. Matt shot nearly every portrait in our Industry Influencers special section, which is no small feat, given how many local business owners we feature. On top of that, he photographed our regular monthly content, our fall denim fashion feature, and this month’s cover. He knocked it out of the park. I have looked at that cover more times than I probably should admit. Some of you know Matt as the guy behind the lens at our events, but he has a whole other side to him too.

Under the name Cornelius Creations, he runs a YouTube channel where his talent and creativity get to run wild. If you have not checked it out, I would encourage you to. It will give you a whole new appreciation for what he brings to our pages every month. Here is the thing, though. I could write about the hard work of every single person on the team, and I would mean every word. I get to put my name on this page, but even that is not something I do alone. Someone edits every word I write, and most months, it’s the team giving me great ideas about what I should write. Left to my own devices, I would most likely still be staring at a blank page. The writing, the design, the sales calls, the late nights, and the last-minute changes I swear I will stop making... they handle it all with more grace than I probably deserve. The Texarkana Magazine team is the real reason this magazine lands in your hands every month looking the way it does. This issue is a good one. Gorgeous fall fashion denim, an impactful story about life after breast cancer, and the reminder that the journey does not end when treatment

PUBLISHER’S LETTER

TEXARKANA MAGAZINE

BY ARKANSAS REPRESENTATIVE CAROL DALBY

E lection Day may still seem a long way off, but now is the time for Arkansans to make sure they are ready for the November General Election. On Tuesday, November 3, voters will choose who represents them at the local, state, and federal levels. Depending on where you live, your ballot may also include local races and issues that directly affect your community. We often hear that voting is a civic duty. I think it is also one of the simplest and most important ways we can have a say in what happens in our communities. As a state representative, I see every day how decisions made in government affect our daily lives. The issues we debate at the Capitol aren’t abstract. They involve our schools, roads, taxes, public safety, and services our families and communities depend on. Those decisions begin with the people you elect to represent you. That’s why I am always surprised when I hear someone say their vote doesn’t matter. If you spend much time around the Arkansas House, you know just how close elections can be. We have had several House races decided by fewer than 50 votes. In 2020,

a primary runoff for an Arkansas House seat was decided by a single vote. One voter staying home or deciding to go to the polls really can make a difference. The numbers from our last general election also tell an important story. In 2024, Arkansas had 1,828,133 registered voters, but 1,187,243 cast a ballot. That’s a turnout of 64.94%. That means more than 600,000 registered voters did not participate. And because turnout is typically lower when there isn’t a presidential race at the top of the ballot, it is especially important to remind people that state and local elections matter, too. In many ways, those are the elections that can have the most noticeable impact on your everyday life. The people elected to state and local offices make decisions about issues you encounter close to home. You may even know some candidates personally or see them at the grocery store, at a ballgame, or at a community event. The good news is that Arkansas voters have plenty of time and several opportunities to participate this year. The deadline to register to vote in the General Election is Monday, October 5. Early voting begins October 19 and is

available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Early voting ends at 5 p.m. Monday, November 2. On Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, polls will be open from 7:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. If a county or municipal race requires a runoff, the General Runoff Election will be held December 1. The registration deadline for that election is November 2. Between now and November, take a few minutes to make sure you are prepared. Check your voter registration. Find out where you vote. Take a look at a sample ballot and learn about the candidates and issues you will be asked to consider. Then decide whether voting early or voting on Election Day works best for you. Voting does not take much time, but the people we elect will make decisions that affect our state and communities for years to come. I have seen elections come down to a handful of votes. I have seen one come down to just one. So when someone tells me their vote does not matter, I know better. It does. Make a plan to vote this November.

BANK MARKETING & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Kali Bannon, Programs & Design Specialist Farmers Bank & Trust

I n community banking, the marketing is only as good as the relationships behind it, and that is exactly where Kali Bannon shines. As Programs & Design Specialist for Farmers Bank & Trust, Kali is the creative force behind much of what customers see, from digital campaigns and social content to the branded programs and promotions across the bank’s growing footprint in Arkansas, Texas, and Oklahoma. She serves on the PG Education Foundation, Texarkana Gameday Advisory Board, Wacha Family & Friends Foundation, and Women of Hope & Courage. People do not bank with a logo. E very successful commercial and civil project begins with a solid foundation, and that is where Francis Excavating comes in. In recent years, the company has increasingly focused its expertise and resources on heavy civil and commercial construction. Today, Francis Excavating partners with engineers, developers, general contractors, municipalities, and other commercial clients throughout the Texarkana region and beyond, completing projects on both sides of the Texas-Arkansas state line.

HOSPITALITY & EVENTS Natalie & Cody Peek, Haley & Adrian Keener The Primary Hotel | Commons | Court

F or most of a century, the old Nash School on Highway 82 was where local kids learned their letters. Today it is The Primary, a five- acre campus where Cody and Natalie Peek and Adrian and Haley Keener are giving Texarkana the kind of place folks used to drive to Dallas to find. The Primary Commons opened first in October 2025. Led by regenerative farmer Annemarie Sullivan, the kitchen sources roughly three- quarters of its ingredients from the four-state region, with the farmers listed on the seasonal menu. Craft cocktails, a covered patio, and weekend brunch make it as easy for a Wednesday walk-in as for a Saturday night reservation. Next door, the school’s former basketball court is now The Court, a 12,000-square-foot event venue

with a professional kitchen, bride-and-groom suites, meeting rooms, and an outdoor square. The Pavilion beside the restaurant hosts gatherings of up to 50. The final piece, The Primary Hotel, opens in early 2027 and includes 17 suites, a plunge pool, a courtyard, and a fitness center. Soon, a wedding party will be able to rehearse, celebrate, and stay the night all on one property.
