Wake Forest Comprehensive Transportation Plan - Dec. 2021

WAKE FOREST COMPREHENSIVE TRANSPORTATION PLAN

Intersection Hot Spots Intersections with high traffic and safety concerns were identified from the comments received during the initial public engagement period. From this list of intersections, six were selected by the Technical Steering Committee for an in-depth study, which were termed as ‘Hotspot Intersections’. Traffic flow and turn counts were conducted at these intersections to understand the existing traffic pattern. Short term and long term recommendations were developed to improve the LOS at these intersections based on existing counts and modeled future traffic flows. Level of Service (LOS) is a measure of congestion derived from traffic volumes and roadway capacity. LOS has ratings of A, B, C, D, E, and F. Ratings of E and F indicate the roadway is congested with existing volume and capacity. Ratings of C and D indicate congestion is present, but there is no adverse effect on traffic flow. The preliminary study for hotspot improvements was done for six intersections, and it does not encompass all locations where high traffic is a concern. It is strongly recommended to include smart signals for all corridors with high traffic and multiple, close-spaced intersections.
