tury inside the ring, taking his lumps from opponents, and putting the hurt on them himself at every opportunity. Professional wrestlingmay be sport’s entertainment, but Bushwhacker Luke has collected his share of aches and scars from most every fight he’s ever been in. When asked why he’s stayed in the ring for somany years, Luke offers his personal philosophy in response. “You got to keep your body fit,” he said. “If you slow down too much, you come to a standstill. I’ve always been involved in wrestling. It’s great to go out there and see the fans.”

Rangers vs. Colts The Gloucester Rangers are back in Rockland Friday night at the Clarence-Rockland Arena on the Canadian International Hockey Aca- demy campus grounds. This time, the Rangers are playing host to the Cornwall Colts for junior A action in the Central Canada Hockey League. – Gregg Chamberlain Nats and Gatineau tie up score The Rockland Nats hosted Gatineau-Hull Volant for a seven-all tie score after two periods of overtime play. Jeff Brent scored a hat trick for Rockland with solo shots going in from Garrett Reed, Raphael Payant, Benoît Brunet, and Came- ryn Griffiths. The Nats are in Vankleek Hill Nov. 27 for a Friday night game against the Cougars. They return home Sunday afternoon to host the St-Isidore Eagles. – Gregg Chamberlain Next to his native NewZealand, Canada is likely Bushwhacker Luke’s most favorite country in the world. It’s where theWWF/ WWE star got his big break back when he got started in professional wrestling. «Canada was my first time in the big time,» Luke explained during a phone inter- view from his home/office in Tampa Bay, Florida. «Before that me andmy brother had been working the Far East circuit.» His birth name is Brian Wickens, but he is better known as “Bushwhacker” LukeWil- liams and goes fulltime under his profes- sional name these days. Bushwhacker Luke recalled that he and his friend and longtime partner ButchMiller worked in both Eastern and Western Canada, first with Le Grand Prix out of Montréal, and then later with Stu Hart’s Stampede Wrestling. During their early years of wrestling, Luke and Butch went through various tag-team monikers, each one having some kind of New Zealand reference.Theymoved up into the NWA (National Wrestling Alliance) as The Kiwis orThe Kiwi Sheepherders, taking on all challengers, earning themselves belt titles, and butting heads with other up-and- coming famous Canadianwrestlers like Rick “The Hammer” Martel, and Rowdy Roddy Piper. Butch decided he wanted to go back home to Australia to wrestle, so Luke teamed up another fellowwrestler from the Southern Hemisphere, “Lord” Jonathan Boyd of the Royal Kangaroos team, and they continued the Sheepherders traditional fighting style through various lower-tier national wrestling associations until Luke and Butch partne- red again and, after many years with the UWF and other outfits, tag-teamed their way into the World Wrestling Federation spotlight as the Bushwhackers, combining comedy outside of the ring with some serious bodyslamming on their opponents inside the squared circle. That continued on through themid-1990s until they left the WWF and continued ap- pearing on the independent wrestling cir- cuits until 2001. Nowadays, Bushwhacker Luke works alone, most of the time behind the scenes, dOing booking and promotional work for himself and other wrestlers plus guest ap- pearances at conventions. Earlier this year,

Luke still likes to go into the ring at least a couple times a month and this month he is bringing his grin-and-grapple style to Rockland as the headliner for the GNW pro wrestling event in Rockland, Nov. 27, at the Jean-Marc Lalonde Arena. «They’re going to see the old Bushwhac- ker,» he said, with a chuckle. «I’m looking forward to coming to Rockland.» All in all, he’s spent more than half a cen-
