UNDERSTANDING THE INFINITE There are some theological problems which are extremely difficult to explain with our limited finite wisdom. A min ister was walking along the seashore quietly meditating on the things of Christ and contemplating his sermon for the following Sunday. It was to be based on the subject of the Trinity. This has concerned Bible scholars clown through the ages. In our feeble think ing it is difficult to conceive of God being three and yet only one. While wrestling with this baffling thought, his attention was drawn to a little girl playing in the sand. Back and forth she went, carrying a shovelful of water from the receding waves to a little hole which she had dug. He stopped and commented, “Say, that looks good. What are you doing, young lady?” W ith an air of child-like confidence and without hesitation she replied, “O I am going to empty the sea into this little hole I’ve dug.” The minister smiled as she dashed back to the surf. Then he continued in his walk. He realized that he was trying to do ex actly what the little girl was vainly attempting. The infinite cannot be compressed into the finite. No wonder the Apostle wrote, “And without con troversy great is the mystery of godli ness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed in the world, received up into glory” (I Timothy 3:16).
