4 USES ”S”
by Dr. Walter L. Wilson
H ave you ever thought how valu able the letter “s” is in our Bi bles? The truths contained in that lit tle letter can fill your heart with gladness and with surprise. In the Song of Solomon 2:1 we read that the Lord Jesus Christ is the Lily of the Valleys. You see everyone has valleys in his life. Discouragement, sorrow, frustra tion, depression, grief and remorse. The Saviour says, “I will never leave thee nor forsake thee.” That means in every valley. Financial, physical, spiritual, mental valleys are where the Lord will be your peace. Whenever the clouds appear and the tears freely flow; when ever the heart is broken and carefully laid plans go awry, remember this “S,” He is the Lily of the Valleys. In Psalm 19:14 we read, “Let the words of my mouth, and the medita tion of my heart, be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer.” Words is in the plural. In Jeremiah we find the plural going to the singular, “Thy words were found and I did eat them; and Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of my heart.” This is true in at least seven verses of the Bible. There is a good reason for this. A person gets some thing out of the Bible and as you taste of the Scriptures here and there you rejoice in the rich, luscious fruit God has provided. Then the entire Bible becomes more precious to you. Al though we can’t eat all of the Word we are glad we have the entire Book. A sneering atheist came to me one day and said, “Dr. Wilson, there is no verse in the Bible you can prove is true.” I said to him as kindly as I could, “My brother, if I find a verse
I think is true, will you permit me to prove it to you?” “Of course,” he re sponded rather gleefully. I quoted him Proverbs 30:33, “Surely the churning of milk bringeth forth butter, and the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood.” I told him, “I’ll be happy to prove that to you if you want me to.” I started taking my coat off and for a minute I thought he meant business. He responded sourly, “Any old fool knows that verse is true.” I smiled, “Well, I’m glad you admit you’re a fool.” I asked him, “How about the verse, ‘Husbands love your wives.’ Shouldn’t they? How about, ‘All the rivers run into the sea and the sea is never full.’ Isn’t that true?” Well, he knew what I was talking about. From there I lead him to John 3:16; 5:24; 14:6; and the dear fellow accepted the Lord. He was just putting up a big front like so many others. The Lord wants us to meditate- on His Word. Sometimes we only think about our troubles. The more that hap pens, the worse they will get. After a while the mole hill becomes a moun tain. All we can see is trouble ahead. We also read, “The entrance of thy words giveth light.” The Lord doesn’t want you to wander around in the darkness of life like so many people of the world. You are one of the “chil dren of light.” If you are depressed all the time how can you radiate the joy of Christ? Are you treasuring portions of His Word in your heart? If you were asked to recite the various verses you know word perfect, how far could you go? Another interesting lack of a plural is found in the Lord’s words, “I am the
