I continue to be surprised by Serbians’ ability to combine deep cynicism with talent, creativity and a “why not?” attitude. Serbians don’t save money for a future they can’t foresee, but they will spend their limited dinars or stashed eu- ros on a good coffee and a dream without thinking twice. When they didn’t have a seaside, they built a beach on a river. When they ran out of space on land in the city centre, they built platforms on the water. Belgrade is now the com- bined but completely uncoordi- nated product of the lone ideas of many people, and that’s what makes it so exciting, dynamic, and entirely unpredictable. I’m not worried about Belgrade’s future—it will become a prominent Europe- an capital, but that will happen at its own pace and in its distinctive- ly Serbian way. As someone who has only recently had the chance to see a community develop, this place I now call home is a unique- ly fascinating story that I’m lucky to be a part of.

Ne brinem za Beograd. On će postati centar Evrope u svoje vreme i na svoj način I’m not worried about Belgrade. It will become a European capital at its own pace and its own way

their own. Little by little, and per- haps without realising it, this area will be bustling, and it will have a character that no one, even some- one like me who lives in the mid- dle of it, is able to foresee.
