MOLIM SE ZA JAVOR I SMREKU I PRAY FOR MAPLE AND SPRUCE
Pravlje- nje instrumenta, taj finalni deo, odslikava vaš ka- rakter. Violine pravimo jer volimo umetnost, a ne zbog novca – kaže Biljana.
Not a day goes by without Biljana Popović from Zemun praying to God for the health of ma- ple and spruce; for these trees to remain, when Serbian forests are not in the best of states, becau- se without them there would be no violins. Biljana is the only Serb capable of making a violin with her own hands. The secret of this delicate and pre- cise craft sprouted in her thanks to her husband Jovan, a former soloist of the Radio Belgrade Orc- hestra. He in turn learnt the craft from Ukrainian Alex Smigelyski, the assistant of Gio Batta Mora- ssi of Cremona, one of Italy’s most famous violin- makers. Today their small “Puž” (Snail) workshop produces violins that are played by Jovan Kolund- žija, Dušan Panajotović and Nemanja Radulović. – We do everything by hand and in that way we don’t kill the molecules that play in the wood. We once even managed to extract the wood for a violin with a spoon. Creating the instrument, that final part, reflects your character. We create vio- lins because we love art, and not because of mo- ney – says Biljana.
