About the Training High Five Created in 2013, the Training High Five is a recognition program for particularly effective training solutions implemented by CHART members. The winners of the High Five are showcased at the summer CHART conference and become part of an annual compilation of ideas. This collection features solutions that have helped deliver training more efficiently, allowed trainees to more quickly achieve their learning objectives, and/or improved the overall performance of employees. Please explore this anthology of ideas, and perhaps you can copy, transform, and combine these sparks into your own successful solution. Share Your Success If you have a training solution that has really worked for you, please consider demonstrating our guiding principles of Learning, Sharing, Growing, and Caring and send it to CHART for the betterment of everyone in the organization. It doesn’t matter if it’s a simple training game or a complex rollout strategy; as long as it moved the needle in some way at your company and isn’t proprietary, we would love to hear about it. How to Submit Your Ideas Nominations are due by June 1st. Visit the CHART website (Membership & Community > Awards & Scholarships) for more details and the quick and easy online nomination form. The CHART Board will review ideas for originality, impact, and relevance. The top ideas submitted each year will be highlighted at the summer conference and then posted on the CHART website for members to see and use. The High Five winners will be contacted in late June and you can look forward to seeing your ideas in another year-end compilation.

Happiness Officers Cana Den Mi Sapato ( Walk In My Shoes)

Submitted by: Nadine Willems-Antersijn Corporate Trainer, Giannis Group

Objective

To promote employee satisfaction and wellbeing by increasing empathy and teamwork.

How it Works

At Giannis Group, we have implemented a company-wide Happiness Office to increase employee health and wellbeing, with the goal of raising job satisfaction scores to over 85% among our 500

Spending time working in another area of the company shifts perspectives, promotes empathy, and improves teamwork.

employees. Each of our locations, which include 10 food and beverage locations as well as a boutique hotel, has a dedicated Happiness Officer who works closely with employees at that location. The Happiness Officer monitors the culture of the team and receives direct feedback from employees. This summer, we implemented a new project with the Happiness Officers called “Cana Den Mi Sapato,” which means “Walk In My Shoes.” Each Happiness Officer had the opportunity to work at another location, doing a different job than they normally do. They participated in every aspect of the company, washing dishes, toasting bagels, mixing drinks, and processing shipments, to name a few.

Results

Experiencing another employee’s day-to-day work responsibilities increased empathy and promoted a spirit of teamwork, which is exactly what the Happiness Office aims to do. It allowed Happiness Officers to understand more deeply that all roles are important and valuable, and dispelled the misconception that someone else’s job would be so much easier or less stressful than their own.

SPECIALTY

Three Dots Icebreaker Submitted by: Winona Bullis Director of Field Training-Specialty Brands, Focus Brands

Objective

Effective icebreakers enhance cooperation, foster teamwork, and help to put people at ease. The best icebreakers are also quick, easy, and fun!

A simple icebreaker activity that can be used in any setting with any group of people.

How it Works

The dots in this icebreaker are pieces of information that participants share about themselves. When participants find they have something in common with each other, it helps them to feel more connected, included, and comfortable in the group, and opens avenues of communication and shared experiences. This is how the activity rolls out: I share 3 dots about myself with the group, and then someone who connects with one of my dots shares it and adds two more dots about themselves. The next person can connect with any of the previously shared dots. For Example:

I like to SCUBA dive.

I also love Mexican food.

I have 2 kids.

I am a Marine Veteran.

I also have 2 kids.

Person 2

I love Mexican food.

Person 1

Red is my favorite color.

I love the Chicago Cubs.

Person 3

I once lived in Nashville.

I like to garden.

I have also lived in Nashville.

I have a dog.

Person 4

Results

This icebreaker works in any environment, with any group of individuals. It does not require any props or preparation, and is good for both work and social situations.

Submitted by: Jason Lechner Director of Training and Development, Pizza Ranch New Restaurant Openings 2.0

Objectives

• Decrease pre-opening turnover % (previously 20-30%) • Increase overall productivity • Increase guest experience scores

Revising the NRO process with a focus on culture helped with all of our objectives, and had unexpected additional benefits as well.

How it Works

We employed a strategy of using rewards , recognition , and relationships to improve the employee experience and build the culture of each new restaurant in order to achieve our objectives. This involved elevating the energy and building excitement from day one, implementing gamification, rewarding teamwork, and publicly recognizing and celebrating team member achievements.

Results

• Pre-open turnover decreased by 10%+ across all locations • Guest experience surveys were higher than pre-process improvement

• Time-to-proficiency success was achieved quicker while maintaining guest satisfaction • Increased desire among employees to be part of training team because they saw it as fun • Franchisees became willing to partner (and pay for) additional training, and pay for the prizes and giveaways used during their NRO (initially the expenses were borne by training team) • Improvements led to increased trust and enthusiasm across the chain in other training initiatives

Submitted by: Nancy Manning Manager, Instructional Design, Dunkin’ Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down Objective

Ensure that everyone is “heard” by using this silent method for taking a consensus.

To streamline decision-making so that everyone gets a say, and to provide a visual way to determine consensus.

How it Works

This exercise is useful following a discussion of a decision that needs to be made. After the problem and potential solution(s) are laid out, pros and cons have been discussed, and people have had an opportunity to weigh in on the decision, this is a good way to visually achieve consensus, or recognize that more discussion may be necessary. Simply ask all participants to weigh in on a decision using one of the following gestures:

Thumbs Up means “I agree.”

Thumb Sideways means “I don’t care for the decision, but I can live with it.”

Thumbs Down means “I disagree.”

Results

This process levels the playing field between those who tend to be more loud and outgoing—who feel comfortable speaking up and sharing their opinion, and those who are quiet, and may not speak up right away if they have a concern or another idea. It also decreases the overall volume of discussion. Thumbs up/thumbs down allows everyone to be “heard” and quickly shows alignment of opinions or lack thereof. The visual nature makes consensus quick and easy to quantify. It also can indicate that more discussion may be needed if the decision is widely split. This works well in person as well as in virtual video meetings, such as those held on Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
