Cathedral School for Boys, a department of Grace Cathedral, is accredited by the California Association of Independent Schools, and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools and the National Association of Episcopal Schools. As an institution with 501(c)(3) non-profit status, it relies on the generosity of individual and community support and an active Parents Association to fund its annual operating and capital needs. If you’d like to make a gift to the School or would like more information on how you can make a difference in the lives of the School and our boys, please contact James Schmidt, Director of Development at schmidt@cathedralschool.net. LETTER from the Headmaster

It is hard, however, for a report like this to quantify all of the other ways that those who love the School commit themselves so fundamentally to its prosperity. How do we quantify, for instance, the time that our staff devotes to the boys, or the hours that our parents volunteer in the lunchroom or library, or the admiration that our alumni convey to others of their CSB experience, or the experience and wisdom that our Board of Trustees imparts? This type of dedication often goes unnoticed, and those providing it rarely seek recognition. Yet, its influence cannot be denied. It is the combination, then, that makes our school special. Our community gives so willingly and in so many ways because we believe so fervently in the Mission of Cathedral School for Boys. And perhaps more importantly, our commitment to this place serves as an example that our boys should follow. Very truly yours,

MY GRANDFATHER WAS A DEPRESSION-ERA DOCTOR IN A SMALL COASTAL TOWN.

Many of his patients struggled to make ends meet, and they would often devise creative solutions for paying him for his services, even though he often refused to charge. He would mention some families paying with food—dinner would

regularly appear on his front steps—and one occasion, he recounted a family paying him with a litter of puppies. In my mind, I could see him saying something like, “Really, you shouldn’t have. Really. . . .” Knowing my grandfather’s magnanimity, though, I suspect that he accepted the gift for what it was—a heart-felt demonstration of thanks from a family who appreciated his work on their behalf. Our Annual Report recognizes all of those who have made contributions that have allowed Cathedral School for Boys to thrive in the previous year. Quite frankly, it would be impossible for us to operate, or certainly to operate as successfully as we do, without such generous financial support.

LETTER from the Board Chair AS WE SAT AT DINNER ONE NIGHT RECENTLY, our fourth grader

Perhaps most exciting of all, during the last year, our Board approved a strategic planning process, which is well underway. Led by Trustees Kath Tsakalakis and Michael Dunn, the strategic planning team has been imagining how CSB could grow and change over the next several years so that we remain a leader in boys’ education. In doing so, we have listened to many voices in our community. Our investigations have reinforced the attributes of CSB that have made our school so special and have led us to envision exciting new possibilities. Parents had an opportunity to participate in small focus groups that helped inform our direction, and there will be additional opportunities for community input in the coming months. The CSB website contains notes from all of the strategic planning team meetings. I hope that you will be as energized by the possibilities as those of us on the strategic planning team have been. All of CSB’s wonderful successes over this last year would not have been possible without the contributions of each and every member of our community—our extraordinary headmaster and the talented and dedicated faculty, staff, and administration who instruct, nurture and guide our boys; the parents; grandparents; alumni; alumni parents; our colleagues at Grace Cathedral; friends of the School; and of course, the boys themselves. With such a strong and caring community, it is no wonder that Cathedral School feels like home. With warm regards,

suddenly sang the refrain, “Consider yourself at home. Consider yourself one of the family.” He had watched the movie “Oliver!” in music class that day, and the “Consider Yourself” tune stuck with him. While he sang, it struck me how fitting this song was for a CSB boy. Cathedral School is truly a second home for

the 263 students who walk through the Jones Street doors each school morning. It is a place where the boys master new concepts, form meaningful relationships, and learn from their mistakes, all surrounded by supportive and caring adults who are committed to knowing and meeting the needs of each boy. This was true when our oldest son entered CSB in 2005, and, despite the many changes that have taken place over the years, it remains true today. 2016 was a year of transition for our school, but we did not let that slow us down. Thanks to the hard work of our transition committee and many others in our community, our new headmaster hit the ground running, and the School had a remarkable year. Not only were our admissions as strong as ever, but Tara Boland, in her new role of high school counselor, shepherded the eighth graders through a highly successful high school admissions season. We hit an impressive milestone in fundraising as the Cathedral School Fund exceeded $1M in gifts and pledges for the first time. Congratulations to our stellar development team for this achievement, and thanks to all of you for giving so generously.

Grace Cathedral has had a men’s choir since its founding as an institution in 1906, and boys’ voices were added in 1913. The centuries-old Anglican tradition of a men and boys choir has since blossomed here, as one of a handful of such choirs in the United States. Cathedral School for Boys, founded in 1957, strives to provide education in the best traditions of the Episcopal Church and in consonance with the Mission of Grace Cathedral. Music education through weekly choir rehearsal, performances, and tours, is an integral part of this experience for students in the choir. The 2016 tour to Salisbury, England’s quintessential medieval city, was the choir’s first residency. To have been invited without audition is an honor. The Cathedral at Salisbury is one of the birthplaces of Anglican liturgical and musical tradition. Since its consecration in 1298, the Cathedral has maintained the tradition of church music. THE DOTTIE SAYWARD WYLIE FUND

From 1990 to 2005, Dottie Sayward Wylie served as CSB's Director of Admission and helped parents and children navigate the daunting and difficult process of finding the right school. A vital part of her work was always to build a community that reflected a broad and varied diversity; a community that respected and celebrated differences. She was aware of and sensitive to the financial needs that arise after a family has entered into the school community, and how sometimes these needs go unmet, causing stress and worry for the family. Upon her retirement in 2005, Dottie gave a monetary gift to the School in order to fill this need and provide a designated fund for this purpose. Cathedral School for Boys then named this fund The Dottie Sayward Wylie Fund in her honor. Her greatest desire was THE WILLIAM SCHUPPEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND On the occasion of their 15th reunion, the Class of 1979 established a permanent memorial to William “Bill” Schuppel ’79, that will support the educational programs at CSB by providing needed financial assistance to students at the School. Currently designated as a “discretionary fund,” it gives assistance to students who demonstrate need for a learning specialist, special testing, or tuition assistance. We thank the generous donors who have made contributions to the William Schuppel Memorial Scholarship Fund during the 2015–2016 school year: Allison and William Bennington '79 Joan Dedo Elynor and William Schuppel* Benevity

that the fund would continue to grow and provide help for families for many years. Families who qualify receive help with purchasing uniforms, school pictures, gym shirts, outdoor education expenses, tutoring, testing, foreign language trips, extended day care, or anything else not covered by tuition to ensure that every boy will experience all the School has to offer. We gratefully acknowledge the following donors who have generously contributed to the Dottie Sayward Wylie Fund during the 2015–2016 school year: Judith Saldamando Dorothy Sayward Wylie CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE HEADMASTER’S DISCRETIONARY FUND The Headmaster’s Discretionary Fund is a special fund that may be used for needs outside of the regular curriculum. Funds from this pool may be used for a boy who requires a tutor, or for a student whose family is unable to afford testing fees or other academic services outside of tuition, or to extend these types of services to families and students who would otherwise be unable to take advantage of them. We gratefully acknowledge the following donors who have generously contributed to the Headmasters Fund during the 2015–2016 school year: Fred and Sylvia Chow* Mrs. David Jamison McDaniel*
