10, Bowing before God “O come, let Us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker” (Psa. 95:6). The worship of God Is a soul bowing down before God in absorbed con templation of Himself. In prayer we are occupied with our n e e d s " ; in , thanksgiving we are occupied with our blessings; in worship we are oc- cupied'Vith Himself. God would not have us less occupied with our needs or present them less to Him; neither would He have, us less occupied with our blessings, of return thanks Jess to Him for them; but He would have us occupied with Himself fn Intelli gent worship.—R. A. Torrey. 11. Partnership “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall iind rest unto your souls” (Matt 11:29). The Lord’s collars are yokes fash ioned for two, and He Himself is always one of the two , . . The .offer ing of a yoke is the gracious offer of a partnership. It is the tender pur-* pose of thè Lord that we should pull our loads in fellowship with Him. But we decline the partnership; we work in single collar, and our .necks are galled.—J. H. Jowett. 12. God's Chastening “That the trial of your faith, .being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ” (1 Pet. 1:7). Thomas a Kempis said that if two paths present themselves we should choose that which is most set with thorns. A rose-strewn path is unlikely to be the way of God . . . It is a fa vorite device of the adversary to un derline faith by suggesting that the promised guidance has not been pro vided, pointing to affliction and trial in proof, whereas faith grows in chas tening and in the crucible becomes pure and more precious to God. —Word and Work. 13. His Business First "Study to be quiet, attend to your own business, work With your own hands” (1 Thess. 4:11, literal transla tion). Minding our own business means supremely minding our Father’s busi ness. Doing H is heavenly Father’s business was the consuming passion of Christ’s life. Here is a fair proposition: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these, things shall be added unto you.” In other words: We mind, our own business
best when we mind our Father’s busi ness first.—Christian Advocate. 14. What I Want . “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, .which are God’s” (1 Cor. 6:20). I want that adorning divine Thou only, my God, canst bestow; I want In those beautiful garments to shine, Which mark out Thy household be low. I Want ev’ry moment to feel Thy Spirit indwelling my heart, , His power ever present to cleanse and to heal, And newness of life to impart. 1 want, oh I want to attain . Some likeness, my Saviour,'to Thee; That longed-for resemblance once more to regain; Thy coineliness -put upon me. “-Charlotte Elliott.. 15. Distinguishing Voices “The sheep hear, his voice: and he calleth his. own sheep by name, and leadeth them out” (John 10:3). How . . . can we tell the voice of the Lord from the voice of the enemy? -,. . The voice of. the enemy is exciting and produces a spirit of restlessness and rush . . . The voice of the Lord is quieting and produces a spirit of rest and peace . . . Even when the Lord’s voice is corrective, it does not disturb the calm serenity of your com munion, At the same time that the Lord tells you of your fault, He shows you the blood that will wash it away. —George P. Pardington. 16. Not Forgetful Hearers “But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed” (Jas. 1:25). The first word’in the first command ment is the word “hear.” The first words of Boaz, speaking.to the heart of Ruth, were “hearest thou not?” When the Lord Jesus dealt with the mart who was deaf, and had an im pediment in his speech, He opened his ears first and then set his tongue at liberty. May our hearts be im pressed with the order, and may not Only our ears receive the word of His mouth, but may we ever be doers of that word. —Thoughts from-the Word of God. 17. Exchanging with God “Whom the Lord loveth he chas- teneth” (Heb. 12:6).
