Cancer Deaths, Alaska and Public Health Regions, 2020 and 2024 ALASKA OVERALL Statewide, cancer has been the leading cause of death each year since 1999. Mortality rates decreased slightly in the last five years from 146.7 to 142.3 (2020 and 2024, respectively). Cancer death rates vary notably between the state’s seven public health regions. In 2024 cancer mortality rate was highest in the Northern region (244.3) and lowest in the Interior (124.0). In the Southwest region, which BBAHC’s service region is part of, the rate was 157.0. Cancer Mortality Cancer mortality rates are the best measure of progress against cancer because they are less affected by changes in detection practice than incidence (new diagnoses) and survival rates.
Mortality Considering all causes of mortality, 321 individuals in BBAHC’s service region died in 2024, an increase of about 15% from 2020 (278 deaths).
