Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation: Cancer Control Plan

CHALLENGES Interviewees cited five organizational challenges associated with effective cancer control.

PREVENTION EDUCATION Overall, cancer prevention education is limited. Except for colorectal cancer, there is no community-wide systematic prevention education, including cancer risk and protective factors. EHR UTILITY Certain EHR navigation and system features challenge provider utility, impacting cancer prevention, screening, and continuity of care.

CANCER CARE CONTACT AND COORDINATION There is no designated point of contact who external entities can contact and clinically coordinate cancer treatment and care.

BBAHC’s seasoned providers are good with patient communication; locums often flounder.” “

REACTIVE APPROACH Cancer care is described as reactive and fragmented. There are inconsistencies talking with patients about screening benefits, getting diagnostic results to patients in a timely manner, processing treatment referrals, and providing follow up post treatment.

COMMUNICATION AND HEALTH LITERACY Providers are challenged by patients with diverse communication styles and norms, limited health literacy, and/or an Indigenous language preference, including elders in the highest cancer-risk age groups.
