Goal
Karen Shelden found out she had aggressive breast cancer in 2024, after she did a walk-in mammogram, which BBAHC offers every October. She had discovered a lump that morning and within hours a radiologist read her mammogram and told her she needed to get an ultrasound. “BBAHC worked rapidly, so I didn’t have to wait and stress.” She underwent chemo, radiation, and immunotherapy, and will remain on hormone suppression for five years. Some of her biggest challenges were flying to Anchorage every three weeks for treatment and dealing with the financial strain of so much travel. Treatment was difficult, but her prognosis is positive, especially with immunotherapy and other medical advances. “The doctor told me I have a 94.6% chance of kicking this in the butt the first time.” Her strength and stamina have recovered significantly since treatment, and she realized recently that her hair had grown back enough so she could feel the wind blow through it again. “I celebrate these milestones.” She said she feels a lot more confident about medical procedures. “You can get through it. You really can.”

Intended Outcome BBAHC will support cancer treatment, survivorship, palliative care, and end-of-life care.
