NORTH Russell veterinarian and horse breeder, Dr. Garth Henry, and Casselman equine veterinarian Dr. Carole Minchon, oppose the provincial government’s decision to end the Slots at the Racetrack program. RUSSELL | North Dr. Henr y recentl y m et with both the Ontario Agriculture Minister and the Auditor General to discuss negative i m pacts on rural econo m ies. He sa y s the horseracing portion of the revenue, which m akes up the prize purses, was $170 m illion last y ear— ten per cent of the total revenues. These purses kept standardbred breeding and racing viable. Without the m racehorses beco m e valueless. The Ontario horseracing industr y spent $2.3 billion last y ear. The reco mm endation to pull slots fro m the racetracks was contained deep in a report called Modernizing the Ontario Lotter y and Ga m ing Corporation, which for m ed part of the provincial budget docu m ent. That OLG report states 6300 jobs will be generated b y opening new casinos in cities’ downtowns. However, the Ontario Horse Racing Industr y Associates anticipates 55,000 jobs will be lost if the progra m ends. The report barel y m entions tracks, sa y ing, “The Slots at Racetracks Progra m li m its OLG’s fle x ibilit y to locate ga m ing facilities near OLG custo m ers. Further m ore, the for m ula restricts OLG’s abilit y to m a x i m ize revenues for ke y govern m ent priorities. As such, the Slots at Racetracks Progra m should be drawn to a close.” Opponents believe the slot m achines and licenses will go to bingo halls, which are reco mm ended for “revitalization” and elec- tronic ga m ing. A m erican casino giants Ball y and Caesar’s are also seeking per m ission for casinos in downtown Toronto. Ottawa m a y or Ji m Watson has announced his support for a

This is now possible with the end of the Slots at the Racetrack progra m .” Rideau-Carleton Racewa y south of Ottawa has held over 200 fundraisers for

non-profit organizations and co mm unities.
