• No one under the age of 17 in Malta may buy or consume alcohol and no one under the age of 18 may buy or consume cigarettes. It is against the law to buy tobacco or alcohol for someone you know is under the legal age • Driving under the influence of alcohol is a very serious crime and police make regular random checks • You will need international ID to enter bars, clubs or pubs (e.g. student ID, ID card, driving licence) • Buying, selling and using drugs is illegal

Positively Languages or choose your own. PROTECTING YOUR BELONGINGS: We strongly recommend you take out insurance for your personal belongings, especially cameras, mobile phones and laptops. Personal items cannot be covered by Positively Languages homestay or residence insurance.

LOCAL CUSTOMS

• Malta is a welcoming and inclusive country where everyone should be treated with respect, regardless of gender, background, or identity. • Maltese people are generally friendly and may start conversations with visitors. This is a good opportunity to practise English and learn about local life. However, respect others’ personal space and remember that not everyone wants to chat. Avoid sharing your address, telephone number, or other personal details with people you have just met. • “Please” and “Thank you” are very important words! Use them when asking for something or when someone helps you or gives you information. • In Malta, a tip of around 5–10% of the bill is customary in restaurants when you receive good service. Check your bill first, as some restaurants include a service charge. If this is already included, an additional tip is not necessary.

MEDICAL COSTS Medical costs are at the discretion of your local doctor or hospital. Average medical costs are as follows:

EMERGENCY SERVICES Call 112 in case of fire, medical emergency or if you need the police
