PELIVAN: OSVEŽENJE SA ŠMEKOM TRADICIJE REFRESHMENTS WITH THE HINT OF TRADITION

When you step into “Pelivan”, the oldest cake shop in Serbia, it seems to you that you can touch the past. Scents, memories and everything you see there will take you back to 1851, the year this place opened. - The dearest thing for me is when someone comes and says: “My grandfather brought me here for ice cream, now I’m bringing my grandson”, or when people who ha- ven’t been to Belgrade for a long time are delighted when they see that “Pelivan” still exists – says Musab, who con- tinues the tradition of his ancestors, along with his brot- hers Suhaib and Bara. Mustafa Pelivanović, the famous Pelivan [as wrestlers were once called] converted the prize money from his vi- ctories into a cake shop. Since then “Pelivan” has passed from generation to generation. - The cake shop has survived a lot. At the beginning of World War II the old “Pelivan” on Republic Square was destroyed, but my grandfather Azer built a new one, this one on the Boulevard – says Musab. Old pictures on the walls show the former life of the Serbian capital, and in authentic surroundings they serve ice cream made using the recipes of Azer Pelivanović.
