well. The costumes were made out of some sheets if I remember right, but, nevertheless, the two of them had a blast. While Brenna and Claire are a little too old to go trick-or-treating now, I still remember how much fun we had when they were younger. My wife and I would always make sure that we’d set out to fill their pillowcases with candy. Today, I don’t go out for Halloween, but I enjoy handing out candy and seeing all the fantastic costumes that come to the door. Along with these annual traditions, my wife and I always made sure to take the kids to other fall activities when they were younger. Based on my childhood experience, pumpkin patches, hayrides, and haunted houses are much more popular today. I never really went to a pumpkin patch when I was a kid, but I always made the time to take Brenna and Claire. We’d pick out a few pumpkins and take them back home to turn them into jack-o’-lanterns and set them outside. One year, we decided to go to a haunted house as a family. There was one in town that we’d known about for a while but had never actually been to before. We were all a little apprehensive about it, but the four of us were determined. When we finally got there ... well ... it was almost too good of a haunted house. It scared us pretty bad! They had everything you could imagine a haunted house would have: flickering lights, creepy costumes, and unsettling sounds. I haven’t gone to a haunted house since, but both the kids have gone to some others every year, and they seem to have a good experience with every visit. I think it’s kind of cool that the traditions my family and so many others have enjoyed so much belong to the ancient origins of Halloween. My family has always been pretty traditional when it comes to celebrating Halloween. My wife and I would take our kids, Brenna and Claire, out trick-or-treating, and we’d carve pumpkins, catch some hayrides, dress up, and, on occasion, go to a haunted house. These types of annual traditions have been celebrated for 2,000 years, dating back to the ancient Celts in Ireland. The Celts celebrated a holiday called Samhain (pronounced sow– in) that eventually became All Saints’ Day or All Hallows’ Eve, observed on Oct. 31. They believed that spirits from the afterlife would walk with the living on this day. To protect themselves, the Celts left out food and wine on their doorsteps and wore masks or costumes to disguise themselves as spirits. Many of the Halloween traditions we participate in today, including dressing up, didn’t actually become popular until the 19th and 20th centuries. It wasn’t until the Irish came over to America to escape the Irish Potato Famine and brought with them their culture of celebrating All Hallows’ Eve that the holiday became popular. Trick-or-treating didn’t turn into the family-friendly event everyone enjoys until about the 1950s.

DECORATE YOUR HOUSE WITH YOUR OWN CREATIONS! The leaves are turning, the weather is changing, and the holidays are right around the corner, which means it’s time to bring out the fall decor! To make this season especially memorable for your family, create your own decorations with these fun ideas below. PINE CONE PAINTING Go on a family walk through the park to pick up a few fallen pine cones or take a quick trip to the store to buy a bag. Once everyone has their own hand-picked pine cone, grab a paintbrush and a few colors and have at it! For extra flair, add some fixings like glitter, beads, sequins, string, and more. LEAF PAINTING Take a trip outside with the kids to pick out some large, unbroken leaves, then head back inside and get creative! You can pull out the construction paper and paint trees, using handprints and “arm prints” as the trunks and branches. Paint the leaves you found to spruce up your trees or use them as decorations on their own. You can also use them for leaf printing or leaf pressing. FUN FINGER FOOD When you’ve got multiple friends and family members coming over and you need snacks, edible decorations are the way to go. You can get a little creative and make elaborate treats, or you can opt for delicious and easy-to-make finger foods with your kids. A good starting treat for your family is a batch of pumpkin Rice Krispie Treats. Add orange food coloring to the mix and get your kids to shape the treats like pumpkins before using a few pretzel sticks to make sturdy stems. THANKSGIVING CRAFTS Thanksgiving is only a month away, and your possibilities for holiday- themed crafts are endless with just a few supplies like paper, scissors, markers, and string. You can make turkey placemats, tissue paper trees, pumpkin garlands, paper pumpkins, or leaf mobiles to hang from the ceiling. Compile a list of ideas and have your kids pick out which craft they want to do first, then get to work together to create as many decorations as you want to display for Turkey Day.

Today, dental implants are one of the most reliable cosmetic dentistry services for people who have missing teeth. The first dental implants ever used date back thousands of years. Ancient civilizations used a number of materials to replace missing teeth, including bamboo shoots; stones; shells; various metals, such as gold; and even other teeth. Evidence of the first implants ever made comes from A.D. 600, when the Mayans used pieces of shells to replace mandibular teeth. However, there were two major problems with the types of materials used: They didn’t last very long, and the body often rejected them. For an implant to be successful, it needs to fuse with the jawbone. This creates stability in the mouth and creates a natural look and feel. While implants were continuously developed and used over the next few centuries, it wouldn’t be until the 1960s that the perfect material was discovered. Dr. Per-Ingvar Brånemark, also known as the “father of the modern dental implant,” unintentionally discovered that titanium can fuse successfully with bone. A journal from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) states that in 1952, Dr. Brånemark was observing the blood flow in the femur of a rabbit where he had placed titanium chambers in the bone. Over time, he realized that the titanium became fused with the rabbit’s bone. Through his discovery, Dr. Brånemark reasoned that this application could be applied to dentistry. In 1965, he placed the first titanium dental implant in a patient who was suffering from misaligned and missing teeth. The patient received four implants, which, according to the journal, “integrated within a period of six months and remained in place for the next 40 years.”

• 6 tbsp unsalted butter, melted • 12 oz mini candy bars, such as Snickers, chopped into 1/2-inch pieces
• 2 cups mini pretzels, coarsely broken • 1/4 cup light brown sugar • 2 tbsp granulated sugar • 1/3 cup dry milk powder
DIRECTIONS
1. Heat oven to 275 F. 2. In a large mixing bowl, fold together pretzels, sugars, milk powder, and butter. 3. Spread mixture on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 20 minutes. 4. Let cool for at least 30 minutes and mix in candy bar pieces before serving.

Jack-o’-lanterns are an iconic part of the Halloween aesthetic, but they can quickly backfire. If you carve your pumpkins too early, you may end up with a moldy mess on Halloween. The first rule of jack-o’-lanterns is to wait as long as possible before you start carving. Here are some other tips to help you achieve the perfect jack-o’-lantern this year. FIND THE PERFECT PUMPKIN.

After you’ve scooped out all the “pumpkin guts” and carved your masterpiece, apply a little petroleum jelly to the cuts. This will help seal in moisture. The Farmers’ Almanac also recommends spraying your pumpkin with anti-humidity hairspray to lock in freshness. GO ELECTRIC. Using a real candle heats up the inside of the pumpkin, causing it to decompose faster. An LED tealight with a flickering effect will create that classic spooky jack-o’-lantern look and keep the pumpkin cool. Plus, you don’t have to worry about any trick-or-treaters getting burned if they accidentally trip over your pumpkin. These tips are to help your jack-o’-lantern last longer. When it comes to designs, feel free to let your imagination run wild! The best jack-o’-lantern is one you’re proud to show off on Halloween.
A great jack-o’-lantern starts in the pumpkin patch — or in the grocery store if you’re short on time. Look for a fresh pumpkin with a sturdy, green stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it’s stable when you’re carving. Size and shape aren’t important, so long as the pumpkin sparks your creativity. Just make sure you don’t accidentally bring home a small sugar pie pumpkin, which will be harder to carve. WASH YOUR PUMPKIN. Before you start carving, mix 1 tsp of chlorine bleach with 4 liters of water and wash your pumpkin to help prevent mold. Be sure to wear gloves! CUT FROM THE BACK.
Cutting the top of the pumpkin is traditional, but it removes the stem, which helps keep the pumpkin fresh. It also threatens the structural integrity of the pumpkin.
Cutting from the bottom is not good, either, because all the liquid inside
