A BUCKET-LIST RIDE UP HALEAKALĀ CRATER

I recently returned from Maui, one of the best vacations I’ve ever had the pleasure of going on. After several days spent lounging in the sunshine, exploring the beaches, and especially mountain biking, I’m back to work, totally refreshed. In Hawaii, there’s a famous volcanic summit called Haleakalā Crater, which peaks at a height of 10,023 feet. The geologic structure is a massive shield volcano that forms the foundation of all of Maui. For a long time now, I’ve dreamed of biking up Crater Road to behold the summit of this enormous volcano, and on this trip, I got to cross it off my bucket list. The week before I left, I called a bike shop called Maui Cyclery to ask if they had any group rides going up the mountain while I would be there. Lo and behold, they had one on Thursday, so I rented a bike and paid the fees. I showed up in the rustic little Hawaiian town of Paia, early in the morning, to get ready for the ride. They opened up the shop and fitted me for a bike. With three of us on the ride, we started off at a pretty good clip on our trek to the summit of Haleakalā. After leaving Paia and passing through another small town, the landscape turned strictly to rolling vegetation and rural greenery

spreading in all directions. Soon we were on Haleakalā Highway. After quick stop at the convenience store to stock up Ed — the guy who was storing our water and snacks — with the essentials, we were on our way to the true climb. Every 500 feet of elevation, the environment we were riding through changed subtly. Temperatures dropped, the air thinned out, the foliage shifted and slowly faded away, and the wind picked up. At 7,500 feet, our driver had to stop, because he was a commercial vehicle and wasn’t allowed in the Haleakalā park proper. So, we took a brief break, filled up our water bottles, and grabbed protein bars. I thought to myself, “Well, we’re already at 7,500, so we’re three-quarters of the way there!” But little did I know, this was where the climb got interesting. As we continued on, the winds really began to lift, with the side winds in particular really making things rough. On the side of this volcanic mountain, we began in thickly wooded pine trees and eventually rose to a rocky, desolate landscape with little vegetation to shield us from the winds. I donned the paper- thin jacket I’d brought along to insulate myself from the cold and pedaled on.

Not too long after leaving Ed behind, I realized I was running out of water. I’d

THE INCREDIBLE NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY OF

ALEX MITROFF CAPTURING THE MAGIC OF THE CALIFORNIA LANDSCAPE

B efore 2011, photographer Alex Mitroff didn’t care about pictures at all. “I’d never owned a camera — never cared about a photograph up to that point,” he says. While attending college in New York, a friend visited the city and lent him her camera for the day. He fell in love with photography almost immediately while taking pictures around New York City. And luckily, he discovered that he had quite the knack for taking pictures. At the tail end of the 2008 recession, his career in law enforcement was put on hold. So, in response, he pursued a job in photography and was fortunate enough to land a job with Norwegian Cruise Line as an onboard professional photographer. It was a crash

course in photography, working every day, all day, for six months at a time with his camera. Though today he works for the Riverside County Sheriff’s department in California, where he returned to pursue another one of his passions, he still picks up his camera and heads out to shoot every few weekends. These days, he spends most of his time behind the camera seeking out beautiful landscapes and stunning portraits of the natural world. “For some reason, trees always draw me in,” he says. “Nature is an interesting subject — you can go to the same location countless times and still not get the shot. You’re subject to the conditions around you, and you have to be patient if you’re going to get the image you really want that’s worth sharing.”

Patrick Silva came across Alex Mitroff’s work in his booth at a local show and was absolutely floored by his output. If you take a look at Mitroff’s images here in the newsletter, it’s easy to see why. He has an eye for the luminous character that sometimes possesses the natural world, highlighting what makes it so moving to the human mind. If you’re interested in purchasing any of Alex’s photographs, need a photographer for an engagement shoot, or just want more information about his work, make sure to visit his website, Mitroffolis.com. He’s a rare talent whose work is worth a look whether or not you’re in the market for some beautiful art.

UMBRELLAS IN THE HEART OF REDLANDS

ORANGE STREET ALLEY’S NEW INSTALLATION

As anyone who lives in the area knows, Redlands is one of the most interesting little cities anyone will ever have the pleasure of visiting. With its abundance of historical buildings and natural trails snaking through the stunning landscape, it’s a place with its own highly unique character. And earlier this year, it got even more interesting when the city installed a dazzling array of colorful umbrellas over the popular downtown Orange Street Alley. Orange Street Alley has long been a hot spot for downtown activity in Redlands, with attractive eateries and bustling bars piping music for diners and passers-by to enjoy. But now, with a canopy of 420 umbrellas overhanging the area, it’s a bona fide destination. Since the installation was completed

in late February of this year, residents and tourists alike have been flocking to the site to take pictures and bask in the inimitable ambiance created by these colorful decorations. “It’s unorthodox, but then it’s colorful,” City Manager N. Enrique Martinez told the Press Enterprise. “It’s whimsical. It’s inviting. I can imagine families and young people wanting to be underneath those umbrellas.” The entire project was originally his vision, and, with help from the city staff and a lot of work, it became a reality. If you have the chance to see this quirky sight nearby, definitely do it. It’s just one more way that Redlands is unlike anywhere else. underestimated the length of the last stretch. I ran out at about 8,000 feet, so at a little turnout where some other park visitors were admiring the incredible view, I asked if they had any bottles to spare. Luckily, they did. At 9,000 feet, the wind was truly blasting, with huge segments of the road being totally exposed. At one point, I had to stop pedaling and put my foot down to avoid being blown straight off the mountain. I ran out of water and food and began shivering in the cold. As I battled 20 mph headwinds, I wondered if I could make it or if I would need to give up and turn back. In the end, it took me five hours and four minutes from the moment we’d left to summit the mountain — not a bad time. The final stretch was a 15–20 percent grade, and though I was feeling the beginnings of dehydration and exhaustion, I made it. I cruised down the mountain at around 40 mph, barely staying on the road in the wind, and made it back in an hour and a half. It was the ride of a lifetime, an uncommonly beautiful and challenging experience I would do again in a heartbeat — though next time I’ll bring more water! –Patrick Silva ... CONTINUED FROM COVER

HOW TO ACHIEVE A MORE RESTFUL NIGHT’S SLEEP

A good night’s sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your mind and body. One study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research found that the quality of your sleep is much more important than the quantity — that is, if you want to feel rested. And we all want to feel rested. So, what can you do to improve the quality of your sleep and get the rest you need? Listen to your body. This, above all else, is crucial to a good night’s sleep. Your body knows when it’s time for bed. Generally, you want to go to bed when you feel tired, whether that’s at 8 p.m. or 1 a.m. Whenever your body tells you it needs rest, you should make a habit of going to bed then. The more consistent you are, the better your sleep will be. Wake up naturally. Jolting yourself awake with an alarm or radio isn’t doing your brain and body any favors (it can be stressful on the body and even elevate blood pressure, which is not good first thing in the morning). If you do need an alarm, consider a wake- up light. Wake-up lights mimic the sunrise, slowly brightening the room and waking your body in a natural, gentle way. 4 www.willsandtrustlawyers.com | www.beatmydui.com

Kick the screen habit. You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it again: Looking at an electronic screen — a TV, computer, tablet, or smartphone

— before bed is detrimental to sleep quality. Light from these devices is disruptive to your brain’s suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which helps regulate your circadian rhythm, and screen time before bed can throw off normal SCN function. Put your excuses for staying up too late to bed. Say no to “one more episode.” And all those emails? They can wait until tomorrow. Not getting enough quality sleep is harmful to your mental and physical health. When you get into the habit of following these three tips, you’ll find yourself feeling rested and refreshed in no time.
