3. The question is sometimes asked, "Until the return o f our Lord., can nations do nothing to alleviate the problem o[ war?" When we read that Asa “he had no war in those years” (2 Chron. 14:6), we find in verses 2 to 5 the cause behind these years of peace. Asa did that which was "good and right in the eyes of the Lord.” He de stroyed the altars of the false gods. He commanded the people to “seek the Lord God of their fathers” and to keep His law. In other words, the precious years of peace and prosperity were based on a spiritual and moral foundation. Therefore we may say that while the world of nations will not be able to bring in a condition of perma nent world-wide peace before the return of Christ, it is possible for a nation to enjoy the blessings of peace for a season if that nation is willing to lay down the proper spiritual foundation. Asa was no dreaming fanatic. Knowing the kind of world he was in, he did not neglect the ordinary means of defense. He fortified his cities and trained his armies. But all this was secondary. He put spiritual things first. Even so today it is not enough to have diplomats, battleships, and armies. We must put God first.
we saw two black shapes drop like stones out of the car. They were observers. For two or three awful moments it looked as if they would be dashed to pieces. Suddenly a white cloud opened above their heads, and their fall stopped. It was their para chute, a frail thing of fine silk, but they cast their weight on it, the air filled it, and it sustained them . . . I said to one of the officers, after the safe landing, “Isn’t it rather awful, wondering whether your para chute will open and hold you up?” “Not a bit,” he replied. “It always works; you know it will.” . So faith is not believing a lot of things about God; it is trusting yourself to Him as completely as the observer trusts himself to the invisible air and the parachute. •' -—The Sunday at Home. Good King Asa 2 C hronicles 14 and 16 Memory Verse: "Trust in the Lord and do good” (Psa. 37:3). Approach: Our story is about a very dif ferent sort of king from Rehoboam. This king was Asa, the grandson of Rehoboam. He, also, was king of Judah, that part of the kingdom of Israel that had been left to Re hoboam after Jerobo am took the rest. Lesson Story: By first thing that Asa did as king was to have all of these images and places of worship tom down, and he commanded his people to seek the living God and to obey His commandments. And the country propered. For ten years there was no war. Then when the Ethiopians with a bigger and stronger army came, King Asa did not trust in his army alone. He cried unto God, and God heard his cry and won the battle for him, and the enemy was destroyed. Then Aza- riah, the prophet, came to Asa and said, “The Lord is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you” (2 Chron. 15:2). For thirty-five years, Asa remembered these words. And then came a time when he forgot. He was an old man now, and an enemy had arisen of whom he was afraid. Instead of praying to God as before, he called in a neighboring heathen king to help him. You can guess the rest of the story. Yes, in the end the enemy was not con quered, and King Asa himself became sick and died. He had trusted in man and not in God. W e must “trust in the Lord, and do good.” Object Lesson K eeping to the C ourse - Objects: A Bible, a compass, and a toy ship. Lesson: Suppose you were lost in foggy weather out in the ocean, in a ship, looking this time, the people in the kingdom of Ju dah had wandered very far away from the true God. They had put up idols and places of worship to strange gods all over their country. The 5 D i v i s io n
