WHAT I SAW IN WAR-TORN CHINA [Continued from page 215] the world has shown quite such a capacity for suffering as the Chinese nation has manifested. Proverbially peace-loving, and having done everything possible to avert this war, China has risen gallantly to de fend her territory and her honor against unwarranted and wicked aggression. With vastly inferior military equipment, she has suffered crushing reverses and appalling losses of life and property. Yet she has taken every blow “standing up,” and still she fights on undaunted. Not only so, but the desperate emergency China has been called upon to face has had the effect of welding her people into a unity and de veloping a national spirit altogether un known in her past history. Both her peo ple and her officials have rallied loyally be hind their worthy Christian leader, General issimo Chiang, and in spite of everything that has happened are still maintaining a united will to resist the invader and would- be subjugator. The fiercest assaults of the enemy and the bitterest experiences imagin able have failed to break the nation’s mo rale, and China’s courageous stand has won the admiration and sympathy of well-nigh the whole world. Can China still hope to win out and pre serve her independence as a nation? This is a large question, involving a number of con siderations which I cannot attempt to dis cuss here. The subject would call for a separate article. Let me only say for my self that there is one factor I cannot over look, and that factor is GOD. I cannot easily believe that God, who so marvelously has preserved this largest and oldest nation in the world for four millenniums, has no higher will and purpose than that she should now be crushed and dominated by a foreign group of greedy and unscrupulous war lords. Nor can I feel that God will allow the unprecedented open door He has creat ed for the gospel among the four hundred millions of China to be closed or seriously
