Lyde Green Community Centre
The new Lyde Green Community Centre provides an important civic and social hub at the heart of the growing Lyde Green community to the east of Bristol. Designed as a welcoming and flexible public building, the single-storey centre accommodates a multi-use hall, café and kitchen, changing facilities, meeting rooms and a series of adaptable circulation and external spaces that support a wide range of community activities. Positioned prominently alongside the public square and main roadside approach, the building has been carefully designed to establish a strong civic presence within the wider masterplan. A sweeping entrance canopy defines the main arrival point and provides shelter and visual emphasis, while the building’s glazed brise-soleil panels integrate printed artwork inspired by the surrounding countryside. As light changes throughout the day, the panels shift in colour and transparency, bringing movement and identity to a key corner of the building. The external material palette combines buff brickwork with cedar timber cladding, balancing permanence and warmth whilst complementing the wider architectural character of the development. Internally, the building is organised around a central circulation spine that runs the full length of the plan, creating a clear and intuitive arrangement of spaces with community facilities unfolding naturally from either side. The café benefits from full-height glazing overlooking the public square and adjacent school, strengthening the relationship between the building and the wider community. Meeting rooms and flexible spaces are directly connected to protected external areas suitable for all ages, helping to create an inclusive and highly adaptable environment that supports day- to-day community life.
