School district studies mental health strategy Over 150 people of all ages attended the second annual Vars Christmas Tree lighting event in Vars on the evening of Sunday, De- cember 1. Hot chocolate and cookies were enjoyed along with the seasonal sounds of a newly formed church choir of 15 mem- bers led by Manon Brisson. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Walsh lit the tree and Christmas car- ols were also sung under the leadership of Vars’ own Ginette Hamilton, who fronts the popular band Sentimental Journey. Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) Trustee Valerie Allen provided her colleagues with an update at their Nov. 27 meeting of the Living Well Charter project. The UCDSB program focuses on student mental health needs, issues, and services. The district has hired Russ Larocque to take the lead on helping draft a mental health strategy for the district. The strategy will identify strengths and weaknesses in the Upper Canada district related to stu- dent mental health needs. The overall goal of the Living Well Charter program is to se- lect and support mental health promotion and prevention programs that meet the needs of the district. Ottawa-based psychi- atrist Dr. Darcy Santor is working with the board in this area and his online magazine, MyHealth, is available to students.
