GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca

The Fifth Annual Porchfest is ready to bring the beat to the front door of homes in Vankleek Hill. “We are good to go,” said Reid Masson, one of the organizers of the annual music festival that turns the porches of homes in Vankleek Hill into temporary stages for every kind of music from folk to classic rock. “We have 40 bands and musicians, and 30 porches, so we could maybe take a few more offers of porches,” said Masson. “But we can also always double up on the shows during the day.” The fifth edition of Porchfest is scheduled for July 20, from noon to 5 p.m., with an open mike jam session later in the evening for all musicians at the Windsor Tavern. Masson noted there was never any problem with getting musicians to sign up for the annual festival. Many returning artists had already told organizers last year that they’d be back again this year for the event. “There are some really good bands,” said Masson, “who do paying gigs, who come here because it’s so much fun for them.” This year’s lineup features the return of popular bands like Vankleek Hill’s own 50 Proof for classic rock, along with Sweating Bullets, a jazz and blues group from Hudson, and J.R. and the Gator of Pakenham with acoustic guitar favourites. more suitable front porches to serve as venues for some of the musicians, festival organizers are also refining the festival plan with a more detailed map available for locals and visitors, either seeking a particular band or musician to listen to or just wandering around enjoying the variety of musical acts. Another festival feature will be very welcome for everyone feeling parched during the day.

“Wherever there is a performer, there will be water,” said Masson, noting that Foodland Vankleek Hill is donating bottled water to supply water stations set up around the village during Porchfest. Masson also added that Low’s Realty, the festival’s main

sponsor almost since it began, is also on board with support for operating expenses. “They are just great,” said Masson. “Everything and everyone involved works to make it (Porchfest) better.”

—photo fournie
