UCDSB BUDGET The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) has to make difficult choices to avoid a deficit for the next term. Trustees met June 12 to review administration recommendations to prevent an $11.7 million deficit in the 2019-2020 budget. Provincial regulations forbid school district deficit budgets. The report recommends reductions for program support, school operations, school office and central office administration operations, and special education. Final vote is scheduled for June 19.

Cette année, les festivités de la fête du Canada à Hawkesbury se dérouleront sur deux jours, une décision du Service des loisirs qui n’a pas fait l’unanimité. Le Service des loisirs de Hawkesbury a pris la décision de tenir le concert exté- rieur et le feu d’artifice le dimanche 30 juin en soirée et toutes les autres activités familiales le lendemain, le jour actuel de la fête du Canada. La décision a été prise à la suite d’un sondage en ligne mené par le Service des loisirs, qui a révélé que 60 % des répondants préféraient que les activités en soirée aient lieu le dimanche soir, plutôt que le lundi 1 er juillet. « La raison, c’est en majeure partie pour accommoder les familles, a expliqué le direc- teur général de Hawkesbury, Daniel Gatien. Le 1 er juillet tombe le lundi et le lendemain, tout le monde travaille. » Plusieurs membres du conseil municipal, y compris la mairesse Paula Assaly, n’étaient pas du tout heureux de la décision, surtout qu’elle a été prise sans en informer le conseil préalablement. Two English schools boards in Eastern Ontario will begin merging the starting time for their regular school days and that will mean changes to student bus scheduling.

Ecolomondo, a Montreal-based company, has recently announced that it has selected Maylan Group Inc. of Hawkesbury to construct the new building that will house its new Thermal Decomposition Process (TDP) turnkey facility, to be located on Tessier Street in Hawkesbury. Ecolomondo and Maylan have recently signed a binding design- build contract with a not-to-exceed price of $6.6 million, with substantial completion expected by January 15, 2020. According to Hawkesbury’s Chief Administrative Officer Daniel Gatien, the facility is expected to create 40 new jobs once completed, in addition to the jobs created for its construction. DON À LA CAMPAGNE ACCÈS 2018
Une soirée-bénéfice bingo, tenue au Delta Gaming Centre à Hawkesbury, a permis de récolter 1205 $ pour la campagne Accès 2018 de la Fondation HGH. Cet évènement s’est déroulé avec le centre qui recueille des fonds pour l’organisme de bienfaisance. La Fondation HGH a 20 bénévoles de bingo qui donnent environ 500 heures annuellement au centre de jeux de Hawkesbury. Le chèque a été présenté à Pierre-Luc Byham, Erin Tabakman et l’équipe de bénévoles de bingo de la Fondation HGH par Jacques Perrault, de Delta Bingo & Gaming et Marie Lemay, coordinatrice pour l’Association Bingo Long Sault. —photo fournie

Le bâtiment, adjacent à l’École élémen- taire catholique Saint-Jean-Baptiste à L’Orignal, sera démoli à la fin du trimestre scolaire actuel, en juin. – Gregg Chamberlain TOWNSHIP ASSET PLAN Champlain Township administration presented council, during its June 4 committee of the whole session, with a four-page summary of the asset mana- gement plan policy for the municipality. Provincial government regulations now demand that all municipalities have asset management plans in place when they apply for provincial funding grants, to show how well they are planning for and maintaining their infrastructure needs. The proposed policy for Champlain Township calls for considering community planning and climate change factors for future asset management. – Gregg Chamberlain MACDONELL-WILLIAMSON HOUSE Activities will be held at the Maison Macdonell-Williamson House, 25 rue des Outaouais, Pointe-Fortune. Proceeds from this year’s tournament will go towards the Conservation Authority’s flagship Maple Syrup Education Program and property upgrades at its new home: the Oschmann Forest in North Dundas. The mighty machines were out in full force Sunday afternoon for the VKH Truck and Modified Tractor Pull and Show ‘n’ Shine at the Vankleek Hill Fair Grounds. “Everybody there, drivers and spectators, all enjoyed themselves,” said Cory Nixon, one of organizers for the local recreational motor sports event. The wet spring weather almost put a damper on plans for the June 15 weekend event. Pouring rain forced can- cellation of the original Saturday date for the competition. Organizers rescheduled their “rain date” plan for Sunday as the alterna- tive, and fired up the social media machine to get the word out on the Web through Facebook and relayed through community websites. Sunday saw the sun break through with some cloud cover to keep the temperature from getting too hot. This suited more than four dozen competitors just fine as they rolled up to the Vankleek Hill Fair Grounds with their half-ton and three-quarter ton trucks, modified tractors, and other rigs, all ready to prove who had the best and the

strongest machine for dragging dead weight the farthest distance down the fairground track. Champion curlers Caitlin Allen (left) and Emilie Lovitt were among those honoured during the Vankleek Hill Collegiate Institute’s annual Sports and Extracurricular Awards Gala, on Monday. The two VCI seniors (see photo) were the Vankleek Hill half of Team Vivier, a combined Vankleek Hill/Navan women’s high school curling team, which rocked their way to the gold medal in the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Associations curling championship, and went on to claim the bronze in the Ontario provincial high school women’s curling tournament. —archives
