Hunters need permit to shoot on SNC lands
hunting and other activities,” stated Chris Craig, SNC senior forest technician. “It’s sim- ply not safe.” Craig noted there is a popular misconcep- tion that any public land is “fair game” for any hunter from anywhere who wants to shoot there. The SNC manages 10,000 acres of forested land and wetlands within the 4000-square-kilometre South Nation River watershed. While the regional conserva- tion agency does allow limited hunting on some of the public lands it manages, hunt- ers still have to get permission from the SNC to shoot in those areas and must be regis- tered with the agency before they head out otherwise criminal charges may result with
fines and/or jail time upon conviction. “We have no objection to orderly, orga- nized hunting parties using our lands with proper written consent,” stated Craig. “Re- sponsible hunting is beneficial to the eco- system.” Wildlife available for hunting in season on SNC lands includes deer, moose, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, woodcock, duck, and rabbit. Also hunters should exercise stan- dard safety precautions, including wearing a bright red- or orange-coloured vest. Also
any tree stands, blinds, ladders and other equipment used for hunting during the season must be removed from SNC lands before the end of the year or SNC staff will confiscate it.
