Thinking Matters 2017

The Lower School trip to Sicily included a visit to columnar basalt lava flow off the northeast coast of the island.

‘Geo-Explorers has been very exciting. Building models was fun and experimenting with slime to model glacier flow has taught us about how ice shaped our landscape.’ Teymour Taj and Max Franklin Davis, Year 8 In the Middle and Upper School, the Geography Society tries to make the boys aware of how important Geography is in the real world, and we encourage Remove and Sixth Form students to become involved in running the society themselves. ‘Geography is such an important subject in the world today – the global “big questions” - climate, poverty, disease, migration, water, energy, biodiversity - all demand geographical analysis and Geography Society lets us discuss these topics and learn from visiting speakers.’ Robert Power, Geography Society President, Year 13 Recent interesting talks have covered themes such as climate change research in the southern seas, exploring Greenland, North Korean economics and tourism, the illegal wildlife trade, global exploration captured in art history, the legacy of the Rwandan genocide and slum tourism in Mumbai. Royal Geographical Society, with groups of both students and individuals attending Monday night Members’ Lectures and Open Days. This year boys have attended lectures on themes as diverse as “Mapping the global network revolution” and “Russia and Europe: what next?”. A particular highlight was a Year 12 outing to an RGS lecture day, where they listened to the eminent Professor Iain Stewart. Iain is perhaps best known as the presenter of a number of science and geology programmes for the BBC since 2004: Earth: The Power of the Planet (2007); Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Volcanoes (2006), and most recently Rise of the Continents (2013). The boys were gripped by Iain’s talk on science’s hope of achieving the holy grail of earthquake prediction.

Sights such as these make the four-hour hike to the top of Vulcano worth every minute.
