MUSIC The academic study of music centres upon the disciplines of history and analysis, performing and composing. The College Music Society actively promotes opportunities for music students to broaden their knowledge of the subject.

History and Analysis To support the teaching of history and analysis, there is a programme of occasional academic seminars and, in addition, use is made of the College’s unique archive of books and 18th century music manuscripts. There are also regular opera trips and other concert visits that take place during the academic year.

‘We had a really interesting time listening to our set works being performed at the Royal Festival Hall by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, whilst also hearing a live commentary by composer and musicologist Rachel Leach.’ Charlie Godsiff, Year 13 Performing The experience of great works in performance is a vital element in the study of historical style and compositional technique. The Music department has a justly famous programme of co-curricular performance opportunities that serve to enhance the academic teaching of the department. All boys are encouraged to take part in major concerts and a spectacular performance of Verdi’s Requiem took place at the Royal Festival Hall during the Lent term 2016. Advanced players are given the opportunity to perform concerto movements with a full orchestra in their Sixth Form year. Other opportunities for performance include jazz concerts at The Hideaway in Streatham, the House Music competitions (Instrumental, Part-song, Vocal, and

Opera Seminar by Goldsmiths College on ‘Die Fledermaus’.

‘I found the Opera seminar fascinating. They made it very clear what was happening with the presenter introducing each scene, even though it was in German.The singing was spectacular. I learned a lot about opera during their presentation - where it was performed, who would watch it and how they are fun
