Thinking Matters 2017

Arkwright Scholarship Award Three boys in the Remove are to be congratulated after being awarded the prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship during the summer holiday. Theo Macklin, Chris Ho and Jack Stevenson all successfully submitted a strong application before passing a difficult theory exam at the beginning of 2016. They went on to have an interview at one of a selection of engineering universities of their choice. Each pupil has now been sponsored by an engineering company who offers support through a £600 award and a personal mentor. Where appropriate, the company will give advice and in some cases offer work experience to improve their sponsor’s understanding of the engineering sector. Through Arkwright, the pupils have the opportunity to meet other scholars and build a network of similarly minded and able people that could form an invaluable network in the future.

Enjoying the sights on the D&T trip to Prague.

‘The Arkwright process has been such a rewarding experience— for all the effort you have to put in at the outset, the opportunities, contacts and benefits have made every minute of the process exceedingly worthwhile.’ Theo Macklin, Year 12 Prague 2016 by Christopher Millis Year11 Twenty one pupils who are studying Design & Technology took a trip to Prague during half term to see examples of their traditional and state-of-the-art

manufacturing industry. They started by visiting the Crystal Bohemia Glassworks, a plant that has changed little in the past 50 years. They saw how raw ingredients are melted and combined together in huge ovens before being pressed or blown into elegant shapes. Intricate details were then cut into the surface of the glass by hand before being polished using a variety of techniques.
