DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

Mission and Vision statements have been slightly modified to include “gender jus- tice/diversity” in accordance with the Quality Assurance Review and the revised Gender Policy at The UWI. This has been done in an effort to ensure that students’ inclusion and respect for diversity is a goal at the DMLL. The initiative is to comply with the 2022 Quality Assurance Review as well as the revised Gender Policy. The New Mission and Vision Statements will be displayed in the Main Office and Language Laboratory, as well as on the Department’s Website and in the Departmental Handbook from July 2023. MISSION STATEMENT To be a place of excellence for the learning and training of foreign languages and cultures in a student centred, creative, intellectually engaging, supportive, diverse, and inclusive environment where students will acquire critical thinking skills, communicative, literary, cultural and translation competencies to function as global citizens and drive a positive local and global transformation.

VISION STATEMENT To be a dynamic, multicultural and outstanding department in The UWI committed to gender, race, culture, and sexual orientation equality.

ACCESS

TEACHING, LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT Orientation to new undergraduate students: From Monday, August 29 to Friday, September 2 the Faculty of Humanities and Education held its orientation for Undergraduate students in which the DMLL participated. After having a general session in N1, students dispersed to the different assigned rooms for their respec- tive departments. Students belonging to the DMLL assembled in room N3 where they had the opportunity to speak to lecturers about the programmes and specific courses needed and to resolve any concerns that they may have had and questions for which they needed answers. Graduate Orientation: This was hosted in N1, September 2, 2022. Following the presentations, students went to Lab 1 where it was host DMLL session. Dr de Inés Antón organized and presented the session on behalf of the DMLL. Postgraduate students were welcomed using a hybrid modality. The session was mainly aimed at offering advice to the students on how to be successful on their postgraduate journey. It was an engaging and fruitful session.
