The Staff/ Student Liaison Meetings resumed on November 3, 2022. This is a good exercise to express students’ concerns, and useful for lecturers to revise their courses, approaches, materials etc. The DMLL wishes to continue with the exercise in the years ahead. Virtual intercultural exchange . Students from Tottori University of Environmental Sciences (TUES) participated in an online cultural language exchange session with students of Japanese at The UWI. The session was held on Thursday September 15, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. Jamaica time. There is an overwhelming interest in repeating the virtual intercultural exchange. Visit of Guest Lecturer, Ms. Shiho Sato from Japan Foundation, Mexico. Her activities included meeting with the HoD and class observations. Ms. Sato observed Japanese classes at all levels and organized informal sessions to interact with students. Her visit culminated with a seminar on Creating Japanese Reading Assessments in which all Japanese instructors participated. Staff/Graduate Seminar Series: • October 20, 2022. Dr. Erick Mendoza Barroso, visiting professor from Univer- sidad de Guantánamo, Cuba, presented on “La efectividad de las categorías del tiempo-espacio-acción en la dinámica interpretative de la cuentística cardosiana”. • October 27, 2022. Ms. Sylviana Johnson, M.A. in Translation Student in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, did a presentation called: “This is Not Child’s Pay: The Translation of Children’s Literature and its challenges”. • October 27, 2022. Ms. Zoealine Holding , M.A. in Translation Student in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, did a presentation entitled: “Translation as a Cognitive Activity”. • November 3, 2022. Ms. Nadia Kellman-Williams , M.A. in Translation Student presented a communication called: “The (Not so) Strange Case of Feminist Translation”. • November 8, 2022. Dr. Erick Mendoza Barroso , visiting professor from Uni- versidad de Guantánamo, Cuba, presented a seminar entitled: “Panorámica historica en la semántica poética martiana expresa en objeto – sujeto lirico”. CELP Information Session . Approximately 25 current and past students of the M.A. in Translation (French/Spanish) participated in an information session held by the United Nations on October 18, 2022. This presentation was meant to encourage and prepare students to sit the United Nations Competitive Examination for Language Positions as English Editors, Translators/Précis-Writers, Verbatim Reporters and English Linguists.
