CHARACTER STRENGTHS A journey of growth and discovery

Every College boy has his own unique set of strengths and talents. Here we showcase a selection who are thriving on College life and building character strengths for the future.

Sean Jang – Year 10, Condell’s House Love of Learning

When Sean Jang stepped through the gates of College in early 2019 he was in for several surprises. Firstly, there was the discovery of how much work students are expected to do independently and, secondly, there was the number of academic choices on offer. Already keen on tech subjects, Sean naturally gravitated to digital technologies, which he finds endlessly absorbing. Last year he joined the Coding Club, was in the winning College Cantamath team, took part in the Aurecon Bridge Building Competition, and did backstage crew work for junior productions The Frogs and High School Musical 2 . He plays the oboe and is in the school orchestra. “My studies this year for NCEA motivate me to work hard and I’m always interested in doing more in digital technology. It’s hard to find the time, but I want to do more and more in that subject.”

Rohan Baird – Year 13, Julius House Gratitude

It is a family tradition to attend College and, looking back now, Rohan realises how fortunate he is to have had the primary and secondary schooling he has been privileged to enjoy. “My parents gave me the opportunity to come to these great private schools, The Cathedral Grammar School for my primary schooling, and then College. Not everyone has access to that, and I’m incredibly grateful for the start they have given me in life.” His grandfather, father, and half-brother Alex Baird were all Julius House boys. Once intent on computer programming, Rohan is now looking at a future in community ecology; his passion lies with the urban landscape and how species find the space to thrive. For fun he has taught himself the five-string banjo – and loves bluegrass and folk and the music of the American Civil War. “It’s a random interest, and playing solo is a great way to use time.”
