College – Issue 38

Matty Hickman – Year 9, Condell’s House Perseverance

Matty’s a stayer. He always tries to do his best at everything and, even if things aren’t going right, he’ll battle on to the end. Take a recent surf life saving race at New Brighton. He was coming third, but managed to summon the strength to power through the waves to win. Matty loves water and as well as swimming for South New Brighton Surf Life Saving Club he is in the College water polo team. He was 3rd in Year 9 at the College swimming sports this year and 2nd in his year on Athletics Day. He is enjoying school life and House life. “You get to know everyone really well in the House and the seniors have been really helpful when you don’t know where to go or what’s happening.” The subjects he most enjoys are Physical Education, English, and Design & Visual Communication.

Alex Brett – Year 12, Condell’s House Zest, Bravery

So far, Alex hasn’t found the workload too extreme in Year 12. Biology is his favourite subject and he enjoys learning about ecosystems. A guitarist who sings, his band JJ and the Stingers came 3rd out of 70 bands in the regional final of Smokefree Rockquest in 2019 and this year they hope to make the national finals in Auckland. Alex sings in the choir and plays the guitar for the school waiata. “My experience is that when you get in the choir you find you can do a lot more than you think you can.” He was in High School Musical when he was in Year 9, and he is on the arts committee. With volleyball in summer and football in winter, Alex says life is full but fascinating.

Ollie King – Year 13, Flower’s House Curiosity, Bravery

Ollie loves the challenge of discovering new things and has the courage to push boundaries. He is a hockey enthusiast and a traveller. As a Year 10 student he went on exchange to South Africa, in 2018 he went on a hockey trip to Germany, and in 2019 he attended the Round Square International Conference in India, plus went on a hockey trip to Australia. “Going alone to Germany for two months was big, but so was being one of only two College boys in South Africa when I was 14 years old.” All this travel has cemented his ambition to become a pilot and has also given him a much better understanding of diversity. “I definitely realise how fortunate I am – even for the small things. I’ve got knowledge I didn’t have before, and an appreciation of culture and the way it’s embraced in other places.”
