College – Issue 38

William Picton-Warlow – Year 12, Julius House Love of Learning All it took was an introductory flight over Canterbury in a Piper Cub for William to visualise his future career. “It just sparked something”. After a childhood full of conversations about aviation by family members – “it was part of my upbringing” – William finally took the controls himself last year and is now in the process of completing the steps to gain his licence. He is looking at a career in civil aviation. His love of learning has developed steadily at College, his skills complemented by a growing maturity. “I feel as though I’m improving all the time. Part of it is because of the teachers, and part is my own self-awareness.” He loves hands-on learning, like mechanical engineering, and is helping to build a custom motorcycle. He has also just finished a coaching course, teaching Year 9 students in Physical Education, and loves to play kayak polo.

Yusef Elnahas – Year 11, Jacobs House Love of Learning

Yusef’s love of learning has taken a practical turn since the terror attacks of Friday 15 March 2019. He is now one of five College boys tutoring children and teenagers affected by the attacks, teaching Mathematics and English to groups of students in Years 2–11, as well as offering private sessions for those who want it. “This is something I want to do from the perspective of helping the community and teaching people less fortunate than I am. It’s made me a better character – someone who enjoys helping people – and has given me confidence in myself.” Yusef also loves competitive challenges. He has signed up for the Science Fair and is developing a pesticide to deal to some key Canterbury pests, plus preparing for the Brain Bee Challenge. “I really like challenging myself and applying my knowledge to the wider world.”

Tim Ward – Year 13, Harper House Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence, Creativity

As well as maintaining good academic standards, Tim’s a musician whose real passion is music production. Out of school hours, he attends an artist development course at the SOLE Music Academy, learning about all aspects of the music industry. Tim, who plays guitar and piano, taught himself about music production from the internet, worked in a production group last year, and has been in College’s contemporary music programme since Year 9. He enjoys painting, photography and Art History, but is equally talented in Physics and Statistics. “I find music really cool, because it’s a mix of both the arts and sciences.” Tim is also involved in the community, supporting the Child Cancer Foundation through Harper House and volunteering at the Weet-Bix TRYathlon, encouraging a reluctant child to keep going and complete the course. “It’s good to do that kind of thing.”
