College – Issue 38

The summer season produced some excellent results across a range of codes at regional, South Island and national events. Sadly, the Covid-19 crisis meant some events, like the Maadi Cup, were cancelled, and other competitions concluded incomplete.

Athletics In December, a group of College athletes travelled to Wellington for the New Zealand schools’ athletics championships. College was represented by 18 athletes and although the team encountered conditions that were far from ideal, with high winds and rain, some great results were achieved. There were 13 top 10 results, with eight of these claiming medals. Edward Hsing and Charlie Cameron finished 2nd equal in the senior pole vault, Alfie Baker was 3rd in the senior high jump, Jordy Annand was 3rd in the senior triple jump and long jump, Jasper Moss was 3rd in the junior AWD 400m, and Sam Idiens came 2nd in the junior 2000m steeplechase. Sam and Charlie formed a team with two girls from St Margaret’s College to place 2nd in the senior mixed 4x400m relay. In the Canterbury interclub championships, Charlie Cameron won the U18 pole vault title and John Wells ran a personal best to win the U18 400m title. Matt Durant came 3rd in the U20 200m, and Jasper Moss 3rd in the U16 AWD 400m. In March, the national club athletic championships were held at Nga Puna Wai, with seven College students involved with the Canterbury team. Alfie Baker was 4th in the U20 triple jump and 5th in the U20 high jump and javelin. Jasper Moss achieved 4th in the AWD U18 100m and 200m and claimed 3rd in the 400m race. Charlie Cameron was 3rd in U18 pole vault and 2nd in U20 pole vault. Sam Idiens claimed a 2nd in the U18 2000m steeplechase, while John Wells was 6th in the U18

200m, 3rd in the U18 400m and took 2nd place in both the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Cricket The end of the cricket season in 2019 saw the two Colts sides play for the one-day title, which the College Black side won, with the White side winning the two-day title earlier in the year. From these two teams a team was selected to attend the annual Vettori Shield competition in Hamilton. College was in a tough pool against some of the top sides in the country and played hosts St Paul’s Collegiate

final against Wellington College, which saw them come up against a very good side to finish runners-up. Over the summer, the 2019 1st XI captain, Nick Lidstone, was named in the New Zealand U19 cricket team for the world cup in South Africa. The team made the semi- finals and lost to eventual winners Bangladesh, with Nick playing his part throughout the tournament. The 1st XI travelled to Sydney for the annual Trans-Tasman Cricket Festival. The talk prior to the trip was around the bushfires and smoke affecting Sydney, but it was the rain and thunderstorms that were to play a part in the tournament. Despite the weather, the team managed to play a variety of game formats to get

School on day one, followed by King’s College and Hutt

International Boys’ School. The College team played some great cricket with both bat and ball to defeat all three teams to reach the
