The Canadian Charter of Rights for People with Dementia
Une charte pour protéger les gens atteints d’une maladie neurodégénérative
If you or a loved one are among the more than half a million Canadians living with dementia, it’s possible you’ve experienced or witnessed some form of discrimination or stigma as a result. Because it’s sometimes difficult for people with dementia to stand up for their rights, the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada has released the Canadian Charter of Rights for People with Dementia. Created by the society’s advisory group, the Charter of Rights was written by and for people living with dementia. It ensures that those afflicted can become aware of their rights and empowers them to advocate for themselves. It also enables caregivers who support people with dementia to become familiar with these rights.

En janvier, à l’occasion du Mois de la sensibilisation à la maladie d’Alzheimer, la Fédération québécoise des Sociétés Alzheimer est fière de promouvoir la nouvelle Charte canadienne des droits des personnes atteintes de maladies neurodégénératives. Élaborée par le groupe consultatif de la Société Alzheimer, cette charte lancée en septembre dernier est la toute première au Canada qui vise spécifiquement à renforcer la capacité à faire respecter les droits des personnes et des familles touchées par une maladie neurodégénérative. Ainsi, tous les Canadiens doivent désormais s’efforcer de protéger et de respecter les droits des malades, notamment :
• Ne pas subir de stigmatisation ou de discrimination; • Exercer tous leurs droits civiques et juridiques; • Participer à l’élaboration et à la mise en œuvre de toute politique affectant leur vie; • Avoir accès à des mesures de soutien leur permettant de vivre de manière aussi indépendante que possible et de rester actifs dans la collectivité; • Obtenir l’information et le soutien dont ils ont besoin pour participer aussi pleinement que possible aux décisions qui les affecteront, y compris celles concernant les soins; • Recevoir des soins par des professionnels formés adéquatement dans le domaine des maladies neurodégénératives; • Être traités avec respect et dignité par des professionnels qui sont tenus de protéger leurs droits fondamentaux; • Avoir accès à des procédures efficaces de plainte et d’appel lorsque ces droits ne sont pas respectés.

• Be free from discrimination of any kind • Benefit from Canada’s civic and legal rights • Participate in developing and implementing policies that affect their lives • Access support that allows them to live
