APRIL 2019

THE HISTORY OF OUR PROGRAMS When we are born, we are in a relaxed state physically, mentally, and spiritually. It is our failure to adapt to the pace, and often unnoticed stress, that starts us on a downward spiral to premature sickness and death. The Vinton Method™ offers a solution to this problem.

equals junk out. Boiled down, all of the nutritional and lifestyle advice basically states that the vast majority (70 percent) of what we eat should be whole, plant-based (fruits and vegetables) food, while the other 30 percent should be lean protein. Anything with more than five ingredients or from a manufacturing plant will lead to an excess of acidity, inflammation, and disease. Modern medicine, with its emphasis on a pill for every ill, is beginning to admit that unless we deal with the underlying cause(s), the pills only reduce symptoms, which allows problems to fester and manifest in more chronic ways, resulting only in more pills. Around the same time, we also realized that due to a lifetime of physical accidents, trauma, lack of exercise, and more, some structural damage is beyond what our neural-spinal alignment can fix. After an exhaustive search to find the best means possible to correct these kinds of damages, we instituted VAX-D disc decompression therapy into our practice to better help our patients. Shortly thereafter, with a growing number of patients who suffered from significant damage to their nervous systems that produced peripheral neuropathy, we instituted our Neuropathy Recovery Program and are now able to offer hope to those suffering in ways that modern medicine can’t. Some folks ask, “Well, if it is all that and a bag of chips, why doesn’t modern medicine do this?” Modern medicine is a monopoly dedicated to the treatment of symptoms, and it’s run by the pharmaceutical industry, which is the most powerful collection of corporations on planet Earth. So, if it isn’t a synthetic drug, they have no interest in it. I recently watched a documentary about eight very ill people with conditions including Lou Gehrig’s, MS, cancer, and more. They went to the Amazon jungle to be cared for by shamans for 30 days. Five were healed, two had slight improvement, and one was so far gone they died while there. Those results are unheard of: 5 out of 8 healed after everything modern medicine had to offer produced no result. I guarantee you did not hear about that on the evening news, during which 60 percent of the commercials that support the broadcasts are drug ads. In this documentary, they also discussed that less than 1 percent of all the plants in the world have been studied for their medicinal purposes because you cannot patent the plant; you can only patent, sell, and profit from a synthetic chemical … a drug. First

Our primary goal with The Vinton Method™ is to bring about pain relief and healing through the removal of interference to healthy mind/body function.

The weight of accumulated physical, chemical, and emotional tension on our bodies and nerve systems.

The Vinton Method™ is a combination of what Dr. Vinton has learned from studying in six different fields and begins with a comprehensive head-to-toe evaluation to determine what isn’t working properly. We then design specific programs to fix the functional deficits versus merely suppressing a specific symptom.

June 2019 marks the beginning of Dr. Vinton’s 31st year in practice.

Our initial 17 years were focused solely on the removal of interference between the brain and the rest of the body through the use of neuro-spinal alignments, the correction of drop arches in the feet, and the use of highly advanced neuro-feedback. We achieved great success, helped thousands of patients, and had the pleasure of teaching doctors from around the world. 10 years ago, we recognized how much people’s lifestyles were adversely affecting their health. With a growing amount of scientific evidence proving this fact and limited places to refer patients to for proper care, we began to include what is called lifestyle medicine or functional medicine in our practice. The scientific evidence is sound and, more importantly, follows the good common sense of junk in

radiate from the problem site. However, it’s the brain receiving signals from the central nervous system that prompts the feeling of pain.

In cases of acute pain, these signals are the result of the brain firing correctly. When an area is wounded, pain lets you know to treat it with care and not exert too much strain on it. Being unable to walk on a sprained ankle because of the pain is one of the body’s defense mechanisms against further injury. In other words, it’s perfectly natural and evolutionarily beneficial. However, chronic pain, which is any pain that persists for more than six months, is a little trickier. Because the body is capable of healing most wounds in under half a year, chronic pain is often the result of your central nervous system misfiring and alerting your brain that something is wrong when it really isn’t. The nature of chronic pain is why surgery is often ineffective and medication will only work as long as you’re taking it. Permanent, long- term relief from chronic pain involves diagnosing and treating your central nervous system. At Pain Relief & Wellness Strategies Center, we use the revolutionary Vinton Method™ to treat chronic pain at its source. Call us today to find out how we can help relieve your pain.

The growing opioid epidemic is all the proof we need to know that we stink at treating pain. We rely on medications to mask the effects of pain rather than treating the problem at its source. Scientifically speaking, all pain comes from the brain. When you understand that, it radically alters the way you think about treatment. “Wait,” you say, “if I sprain my ankle, surely the pain is coming from there?” Well, kind of. Pain as the result of tissue trauma or another injury, which we call acute pain, does

possible chance for success. You can feel confident when referring friends, family, coworkers, or others you may know who are suffering needlessly.

published in 1994 in a prestigious medical journal, iatrogenic disease was the third leading cause of death in the United States behind heart disease and cancer, both of which have huge lifestyle factors contributing to them that are not addressed. Patients are merely given more drugs and more surgery. In fact, there’s a video available online and on Netflix called “Forks Over Knives.” It is a documentary by Dr. Esselstyn at the Cleveland Clinic. Sadly, death is directly caused by the medical treatment prescribed by their medical doctor. Seldom, if ever, is lifestyle, stress, structural misalignment, or brain function mentioned. In our view, that’s malpractice. Four years ago, we again expanded the services we offer with the addition of our Knee Recovery Program. It is designed to help delay or prevent knee and other joint replacement surgeries. We spent years studying the best of the best in the world to put this program together. The success rate is in the high ninetieth percentile. We have created a true holistic, integrated medical team to give you the absolute highest

HOW THE PLACEBO EFFECT WORKS The placebo effect works. Study after study has confirmed it. The question is how. Numerous studies have shown placebos are most effective for aches and pains, as well as seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and depression. The placebo effect even works if you’re aware you’re taking a placebo. With that in mind, a person can’t just start taking placebos (or sugar pills) and expect a placebo effect. There is a strong psychological component. This may mean seeing a doctor or participating in a drug study to get the ball rolling. There are three challenges a person needs to overcome for a placebo to be most effective: conditioning, expectation, and belief . First, you need to be conditioned to accept the placebo as the real deal. For example, the placebo has to look like the medication it is meant to emulate. You might start treatment with the real medication and eventually transition to the look-alike. Then, you must expect it to work. There must be an indication that the placebo is “real.” This might be a doctor telling you it’s real and effective, or it might be previous experience taking a certain medication. In your mind, if the real drug worked, so will the look-alike. Lastly, you need to believe that when you take the placebo pill, it will do what you think it’s supposed to do. Belief is a powerful tool, and when you believe it’s going to help, the placebo will be most effective. In pain studies, for example, some people experienced the same reduction in pain as they would have experienced had they taken typical, over-the-counter pain medication. Keep in mind, however, that the placebo effect affects each person differently.

CELEBRATE JAZZ APPRECIATION MONTH WITH SOME OF THE GREATEST STEEL CITY MUSICIANS

“No America, no jazz.” –Art Blakey

known for his work as a bandleader, Chambers is one of music’s most popular sidemen. The notes he lays down at the beginning of Miles’ “So What” are as iconic as they come.

New York and New Orleans may be the most well-known American jazz hotspots, but the city of Pittsburgh can also claim many incredible contributions to one of the country’s most unique art forms. Jazz is as American as apple pie or baseball, and it wouldn’t be what it is today without contributions from musicians who grew up in the Steel City. In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month, we want to pay tribute to a quartet of incredible talents who called Pittsburgh home. ART BLAKEY (DRUMS) Along with pianist Horace Silver, Art Blakey founded the Jazz Messengers, one of the greatest groups in jazz history. Throughout the years, such pantheon figures as Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, and Lee Morgan played with the Messengers. The second you hear his energetic drumming, you’ll know why he is so revered.

Key Track: “Blue Train” by John Coltrane

STANLEY TURRENTINE (SAXOPHONE) While recording for both Blue Note and CTI Records, Stanley Turrentine managed to excel in multiple eras of jazz. He had the chops to play the most complicated bebop solos and the soul to create funky jazz fusion delights. Within his massive discography, there’s something to love for every type of music fan.

Key Track: “Sugar”

MARY LOU WILLIAMS (PIANO) Though born in Georgia, Mary Lou Williams grew up in Pittsburgh and founded the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival. Though an under-discussed figure in jazz history, she was a teacher and mentor to Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles, and many others, and her impact on 20th century music is too large to accurately calculate.

Key track: “Moanin’”

PAUL CHAMBERS (BASS) As a member of Miles Davis’ “first great quintet,” Paul Chambers is the man responsible for some of jazz’s most beloved basslines. Though not

Key Album: “Zodiac Suite”
