RAPA gets ready to present Michel Tremblay’s Les Belles-soeurs

Russell Association for the Performing Arts (RAPA) is tackling a renowned play for its spring production: famous Quebec author Michel Tremblay’s Les Belles-soeurs. Al- though the two-act play was written in 1965, the satiric play exposes uncomfortable topics in a way that still resonates today. “Everybody knows everybody’s business and they’re all jealous, envious and talk about their kids and their dirty laundry”, says director Sandra McNeill. “It’s a small community in Montreal, and we’re a small community.” Although the play was translated to En- glish, French cast and undertones are being used to reflect the essence of the play but also the bilingual aspect of the surrounding community. With a big ensemble of 15 women who are on stage almost at all times, the storyline follows sisters Germaine, Rose, Gabrielle and Pierrette, the black sheep of the family. Synopsis “Germaine Lauzon has won a million trading stamps, but there’s a catch: they all need to be pasted into books in order to be redeemed. With her head spinning with schemes to redecorate her working-class home from top to bottom, Germaine invites friends, relatives, and neighbors to assist her with this gargantuan task at a stamp- pasting party.
Directed by RAPA’s own Sandra McNeill and produced by Michael Moreau, Les Belles-soeurs will be presented from April 26 to 29 at Russell High School, starting at 7:30 p.m. Front row – from the left: Jane Brownrigg, Christine Erdos-O’Malley, Andrea Jermacans. Over the course of the evening, the party guests shamelessly share their secret hopes and fears, fantasize about escaping the drud- gery of their lives... and surreptitiously tuck the stamps into their clothes and purses. » Les Belles-soeurs will be presented from April 26 to 29 at Russell High School, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Pronto, Village Paws, Pierre & fils, Village Bakery or online at www.rapa.ca. Les Belles-soeurs was Tremblay’s first professionally produced work and remains his most-popular and most-translated work. The play has had a profound effect on Que- bec language, culture and theatre. As descri- bed by the Canadian Theatre Encyclopedia, the play set off a storm of controversy, firstly
because of the language (a particularly rau- cous — some say vulgar or what is referred to as joual in French), and then because it dared to portray working-class women doing working-class things. Russell Association for the Performing Arts Founded in 1989, RAPA is a local, not- for-profit amateur theatre company. While they are best known for the two major pro- ductions they present each year, they also provide bursaries for local students pursuing post-secondary education in the arts, pro- vide sound and lighting equipment for other local charities, and otherwise give back to the community they call home. After completing undergraduate studies at Windsor University, director Sandra Mc- Neill has directed and worked in Toronto with professional and small theater compa- nies. She then completed a Master’s degree in directing at University of Calgary.
