Angela Saxon ABOUT : Angela’s work tells a visual story of looking at a particular subject in a particular time of day in a specific light—observing her subject in a collective way, taking time to see and understand. She has been engaged in actively pursuing an evolving visual understanding of the landscape for the last three decades. Working from the figure is also a regular part of her practice. She works in a variety of mediums, including painting in acrylic and gouache and making monotypes. Her studio is in Leelanau County, MI; she has a BFA in Painting from Indiana University. Her work is held in collections public and private. THIS YEAR: Having open-ended time has been a positive for me. It’s allowed me to focus internally in a quiet and direct manner. I have slowly made adjustments to personal expectations. I have been making a series of abstract graphite drawings during the pandemic. Through that process of internal observation, I’m now starting to see familiar imagery that has been a regular part of my artistic process in a new, energized way. GALLERIES: Robert Kidd Gallery, Birmingham, MI; Vivid Art Gallery, Winnetka, IL; Hudson Gallery, Sylvania, OH; Warm Springs Gallery, VA; Main Street Gallery, Leland, MI CONTACT: Website. Studio visits available by appointment, or via live Zoom.

“Blue of Blue,” Monotype, 2020, unframed 20 x 16 in, $900. These two monotypes are from a new series focused on vistas of Lake Michigan—the majestic clouds and ever-changing horizon, breaking waves, and flat calm waters. It ’s been exciting to see how this series, even though smaller in scale than my paintings on canvas, portrays expansive space. I use soft rubber brayers to apply ink to layer overlapping shapes. By varying the pressure I apply to the brayer, I am able to achieve painterly marks. Incorporating printmaking into my artistic practice has been an expansive experience for me creatively. I am gaining an ever-widening ‘vocabulary’ of marks that I use across my spectrum of art- making.
