“Deep Purple,” Oil, 2020, 16 x 20 in, $425. “Deep Purple” is my latest expression of my love for the color purple, as well as for my iris garden. Fellow Guild Member, Jan, gave me dozens of hybrid irises a few years ago, and last summer, their magnificent blooms overwhelmed me. I couldn’t rest until I had taken dozens of photos and made several oil paintings.

Ann Carolan ABOUT: Following a 25-year-career as an art teacher and school counselor, I pursued my passion for art through workshops and participating in plein air events throughout the scenic Northern Michigan landscape. I begin each painting with a value study to examine the nuances of shape and value. I am truly inspired and motivated by the natural beauty of Northern Michigan landscapes while painting on location, in plein air, amid our visually rich lakes, fields, and woodlands. Working outside, in the crisp northern air and sunlight with its vibrant hues and shimmering lakes has given me a deep appreciation and awe for the majestic beauty of God’s Creation. Besides the inspiriting landscapes of Northern Michigan, I’ve had the opportunity to study with great instructors up north, including Irving Shapiro, Larry Blovits, Cheng Khee Chee, Stuart Shills, Bill Hosner, Pierre Bittar, Tony Couch, Mary Whyte, and recently, Richard Hansen and Kevin Barton. THIS YEAR: I am blessed to be an artist as it has given me joy and purpose during these long months of isolation! “Healing Waters of Harbor Springs,” Oil, 2017, 16 x 20 in, $350.

There are many views of Holy Childhood Parish and Harbor Springs that inspire, but as I searched for a site to paint one stunning summer day, I was taken by how the park fountain was situated like a Baptismal Font in front of the iconic church. The springs in Harbor are famous for their purity and healing properties, having their source somewhere in the Upper Peninsula. “Healing Waters” joins the concept of the healing waters of Baptism that mark us for eternal life of the Spirit and the physical healing of Harbor Springs.
